droughts & trees

i tried posting this on the tree forum twice & it ended up on design dilemmas. do drought conditions weaken the structure of trees? my tall hackberry has weathered many storms unscathed. we've been in a drought since early april & had 2 weeks of severe storms. the hackberry lost a medium sized limb in the 1st storm. this morning i noticed that it dropped 2-3 large limbs but it's been 2-3 weeks since it stormed. could the storm have damaged them & it took all this time for them to fall? or could this be a symptom of the drought or both? are hackberries prone to falling apart? you can see that the splits run pretty far up the trunk.
