I have some Techline office furniture that I bought, probably some time in the 90s. A 6 foot desk, some bookcases, a printer stand and a computer desk. They are all in remarkably good shape, and since they are perfectly plain, they have aged (relatively) well. I have noticed lately that because I use my mouse on the white surface, the "skids" on the bottom of the Apple mouse become caked with white powdery residue from the surface of the desk. My concern is that the laminate is "chalking" or deteriorating and could be somehow toxic. I was going to give the pieces to my grandchildren for a craft space, but am now concerned about this being harmful.

Does anyone have any info on this?
