I’m looking to update the exterior of my home. We think we want modern or contemporary style.

We want to update the cedar, new door, lights, garage and would like to know what the options would be given the color brick we currently have on the home. Thank you!!

Theut colo siding color is awful but the house is quite modern in style so look at a really dark brown for the siding like Wenge or Barista from BM either of those should look good with the brick. Please leave the brick as is painting it will instantly devalue your house. What color are the windows ?THey look dark brwn . A new garage door would be agreat addition and if you find one in a really dark brown you could color match that for the siding color. Clopay does some nice really dark brown MVM style grage doors the a front door same sort of style but maybe a color

The dark brown patriciacolwell suggestions for the siding would work very well for your house.

What's notable about this example below is the landscaping, including the walkway. Consider, at the very least, a wide stone walkway in stone colors that echo the brick from the driveway and larger planting beds.

Something like this, with a great seating area would extend the footprint of the house and help deemphasize those brick pillars. Those would be clad in cedar and you could add a cedar wood look garage door.

I agree with above. The house painted a nice darker brown would look great, and those garage doors would be perfect for your house. I have to agree with the paint color now, it just does not go with the brick at all. Your front door, could stay the same as it is, but, be painted a brighter color, so it stands out. It doesnt stand out much right now.

I would like SW Urbane Bronze or SW Polished Mahagony for the siding, either would be dramatic and compliment the roof. the opposite for all the trim... I would paint the front door a Chambray Blue or Windy Blue

Thank you for this feedback! What are your thoughts on a lighter color new cedar vs the suggested brown?

I think you could go with a lighter gray, similar to the way very weathered cedar will be. Not as light as the driveway though, that would blend in too much with the brick & be bland - you need some contrast to keep it interesting.

However, my first impulse was to also suggest Urbane Bronze or a dark to medium gray. Maybe even a dark gray-blue?

Your lights are okay - they can be painted to match what ever color you choose for the siding.

You need bigger house numbers in a more modern font. I would pull out the hedge along the foundation and go with a mix of some low growing, spreading evergreens, grasses or sedges or liriope, and perennials.

Here's what darker siding might look like. I couldn't get the color I wanted on the garage door as it should be a little lighter to match the brick better but it gives you an idea. I'd also consider updating the landscaping up by the house to freshen it up. Maybe some tall grass like Karl Foerster grass would be nice.

Actually the garage door is pretty cool so maybe just painting it unless it really needs to be replaced.

A gray stain works better with your brick. Your home is already modern No need for any big changes.

A stain that matches these colors below.

Thank you! So, so I want to bring new paneling that looks similar to the colors above? The current cedar is 30+ years old and we’d like to update it. Any suggestions? Also, I love your rendering! How do you do that? Any suggestions for a more modern garage door, front door or lights?

You can change the colors using Sherwin Williams Visualizer

I'm confused. DO you want to replace the cedar? And if so why? Just paint it.

A couple of people have suggested a new garage door with narrow windows in it which will look great with your house and will mimic the windows you already have. It will help to lighten the bulk of the garage.

I wouldn't replace the front door unless you wanted to change the type of glass in it which I don't think is necessary.

Thank you. I do want to replace the cedar as woodpeckers are constantly making holes in it. So thinking Hardie Board or similar. Thoughts?

Maybe figure out why the woodpeckers are attacking the cedar siding of your house first (insects in the siding? making a nest?) and then do mitigation efforts to keep them away from it. That has to cheaper than replacing the siding..

I believe that Hardie has standard colors to choose from.

It's not that you can't select any color for your siding but there's an upcharge

You'll still want vertical plank or board and batten siding for a modern appearance.

I like an idea to go with vertical Hardie boards.

Love this! Thank you!! Can I ask…are these colors still ok with. The close-up of my brick ?

Will those colors still work with this close up of the brick?

    Same

    What color is the roof?

The brick seems neutral and a variety of colors would work.

I'd paint as it is now -- not replacing the garage door, or if it needs replacement, one similar to what you have and not one with glass down the side. I'd rather have people looking at the house and not the garage.

SInce photo colors don't always show true on a monitor (I think I see some red in the mix?), it is hard to say about what works best with your brick. To be sure, pick up some swatches in the range of what has been suggested and see if you like them with the brick. Putting some white paper up against the brick - especially if you make a little window framing the brick - can show you better whether it is a green-gray, pink-gray, blue-gray, violet-gray, tan-gray. You will want to pick a gray that has either the similar undertone, or one that is quite complementary (ie, slightly green can look good with a warm/reddish brick) or one that is very neutral - not leaning noticeably into any undertone. One caveat though, is that if the brick has a pinkish tone, I would not repeat it in the paint, but choose something neutral that plays that down.

It is important to consider the tones in your roof also. They all have to work together.

An option is to upload a really good photo of the house that shows the brick and roof to any of the major paint manufacturer's "color visualizer" tool - they nearly all have some version - and play around with different shades on the siding to see which you really like.

I would actually take the house an entirely different direction. It could be a modern play on a traditional / timeless colour palette. The aged brick you have is reminiscent of classic french country brick (white washed with subtle red tones). I would do all the siding and trims in a white / cream / light sandy gray colour, and the door with a pop of blue. It would be a more elegant and materially rich version of the modern farmhouse which is either all white or all black.

This dark brown is a good palette since you seem to have a brown roof. What's key to this house's modern style is the landscaping, especially the pathway, dark brown mulched garden beds, and great choice of dramatic plants. This is all a good direction to go in.

Color I put is light gray. It is neutral, so would work with your stones.
