One Room Two Ways: Your preference?

Dining room rug is back from the cleaner. During its absence I enjoyed the bare look. I do love the rug here also. I never considered going ’nekkid”, i don’t know how to do the vote thing, but hope some of you will opine.

bpath, I was thinking the same thing. Bare for spring and summer, lovely rug for fall and winter. The doggie seems to prefer the rug!

Ty, maddie! bpath, I have sometimes thought of switching out the wool rug for a lighter summer one, but after seeing it bare I think I’d like it more than a summer rug. Saves money too 👍 But, if that wasn’t an option, which look do you like best?

I like with the rug. If you’re wanting a lighter summer look, I think a seagrass would look great. Nice room!

    Beautiful room!

I can’t decide. I think it looks wonderful either way.

I’m sorry my vote is no help!

The very same thing happened to me. We waited and waited for just the right rug to come along, loved the rug all the years it was there, but grew to prefer the bare floor while the rug was at the cleaners. It’s been rolled in its wrapper for a couple years now. We still love our rug, but leave it in its wrapper.

Such a pretty room - I think I like the idea of having it both ways seasonally if that is not too much bother for you. If not, I vote yes to the rug!

I think omitting the rug gives the room a little modernizing lift, but it’s a lovely room either way.

I have no rug under my dining table, partly because it is so much easier to clean! It’s also kind of a passage way so kind of hard to figure out an appropriate size. I do think a rug would look nice, though, because it’s a dark (mahogany?) set on a dark oak floor.

I can't believe I'm saying this, because I love rugs and that's a pretty one. But I think the room looks much fresher and more modern without the rug.

I'm thrown off by the blinds... Right now I think that's a pretty rug and I like what it does in the room, but it could be I like the blinds...and the dog.

Another vote for the rug & dog. Though the room looks ’nice’ without the rug I think it looks finished and more inviting with the rug. The rug also highlights the pretty flooring. The challenge for me is the rug style. Yours is very pretty and looks great. I’m an Arts & Crafts style & so I would have the rug but the pattern would be more subdued and not as strong as the color in your rug. That said, I love your matchstick blinds!

I'm with the no help group because it's pretty either way. I feel like it's a bit hard to compare because the 'no rug' photo doesn't show the whole room, the way the 'with rug' photo does? I'm wondering if the room looks too bare without the rug, if you saw it from the same distance/perspective as the cute dog/rug shot.

I think because the room leans traditional, it looks more finished with the beautiful rug. I babysat my grandson's dog a couple of years ago, who puked on my dining room rug and pooed on the bedroom rug - both nice wool traditional rugs. Off to the cleaners and I did like the bare floor look, too. I hesitated putting them back down for fear of a repeat, but the dog hasn't been here for over a year, so I think I might add them back this winter. I think my rooms look more spacious without, but I think yours looks more spacious with the rug!

I'm in the bare camp. In our entire house I have small rugs under the coffee tables in the family room and front room. 3'x5' on each side of our bed but he rest is bare floors. Wouldn't change it.

To those of you who sometimes put down rugs and sometimes go without, where do you store your rugs when not in use? And how do you store them so they look nice and don't curl when you lay them out again?

    With rug. Dogs know.

Rug and no white legged table all the time. The acoustics w/o the rug would be awful.

A practical question: when the table is in use for dining, do the side chairs ”fall” off the rug when pushed back to sit down or get up?

Your floors are gorgeous, so you could go either way. I agree with those who suggest bare for the warm months and using the rug in the fall and winter.

Ok, Sue, since you are admitting it, I will not berate mtn for picking on you as I had planned.

Arcy, The legs only look white due to the lighting and no acoustic issues.

Bbstx, six or eight dining chairs can have their front legs on the rug. Good ’nuff.

KL, in our case, we have a rug-less den where it will go. It’s very heavy but we can slide it ! Otherwise, could be folded for under a bed.

Oly, from the entry, rug-less looks more spacious to me.

Fun said it first: the bare floors look fresher, more ”today”. It also reminds me just a bit of British Colonial, which Ilike.

So. Wow! Never expected such a great response. Thank you all so much for helping me decide….yes to seasonal switch!

Didn't get to weigh in before you decided. Happy to hear you're going with the seasonal switch as that was my preference since it looks great either way.

We put down new hardwood floors last month, replacing decades old carpet. Wow, what a difference. It's like a completely different house. The rug I ordered for the living room finally just shipped and will be here in a couple days. DH just said to me that he's going to miss seeing all the wood. Uh oh. Maybe we'll also go with the seasonal approach!
