hosta reverting

I have had an 'Angel Falls' for several years now and it has never had any varigation. I believe it was sent from the grower as this. I have done some research and all articles indicate it will never turn back into 'Angel Falls'. Also indicated is that it is a sport of 'Niagara Falls', but that was developed from two other hostas. I would have preferred it to be what I purchased but I do like it. My question is since it will not develop back to 'Angel Falls' would make sense to label it as 'Niagara Falls' or should it go all the way back to it's parentage. It does look like 'Niagara Falls'. I also had another grower send me a 'Regalia' this year but refunded it and said it has reverted. Is this a normal practice? If the hosta ordered is not true to it's name why send it anyway.

Can you please send us some photos and let us know your growing zone, or closest big city name?

Ok, after re-reading your post and checking the HL info on Angel Falls, it does say it’s a sport of Niagara Falls. When a hosta is a sport, if it reverts back, it does so to the hosta it was a sport of. In your case Niagara Falls. For instance, June’s frequently revert back to Halcyon, the hosta they sported from.
But, since you don’t know what at you were originally sent as you said it’s never been variegated, we need to first ID what you have……so a photo is needed.
BTW, I am not an expert, but I believe my info is correct. Also, once a hosta has reverted, June to Halcyon for instance, it’s possible that the Halcyon could develop another eye that sports again to June. Mine did this.

Wow oh wow another southern grower. I am from Jacksonville Florida, and I grow hostas too. On December 26 we start the Alphabet and show off photos of our hostas. Maybe you would like to join us.

Thanks, that's nice of you to invite me. I'll have to see how my photos are looking and maybe do some updating. I always have enjoyed looking at everyones photos.

Ok, your growing zone is 3a. It’s hard to tell because the leaf edges are somewhat crispy (normal for this time of year) but several leaves seem to have the pie crust edge associated with NF. Also the leaf size is reportedly 14X11 inches and it is in the extra large category. The Hosta ABC’s is great fun and often can help you identify unknowns you may have. It’s very very enabling though……😉

Thanks, This one hosta because it reverted had me wondering what it would be considered. I do have a few that I need to research to correctly identify but even with the resources and pictures it's difficult. They look different at different times. I have usually saved all the tags when I purchase plants so I can somewhat narrow it down, but over the years there have been a lot that have died. Now that I am retired I thought it's time to try and figure it out.

Well then, the hosta ABCs is for you. Many hosta growers/collectors/gardeners participate and you often can get see the ones you have, or even ask for more ID help. See you there!!
