Ceiling Fan Finish - HELP!

I just recently purchased an older home and am looking to update hardware throughout. I really love brushed gold/champagne so I’d like to do modern doorhandles in that color. But I’m struggling with what ceiling fans finish to go with in the bedrooms? Would mixed metals look funny - like a black fan or brushed nickel?

Alternatively, if I went with black fans and black hardware - would that force me to go with a more modern/mid-century design scheme? I would typically describe my style as more transitional, southern, colorful, preppy (planning to do a French blue kitchen, navy high gloss office, etc)

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!!

Unless you love the look of a ceiling fan (I think they look great slowly rotating on a porch in the bayou) it's probably best to pick one the same color as your ceiling, unless you've got a wood paneled room, or Hollywood Regency glamour pad, where something sparkly would do. You really just want something that blends in.

Increasily there are fun fans made if you want to browse around -- in acrylic, or bright orange or pink or plenty of colors. They are incredbly useful so hope you find one you like.

I like white fans that blend into the ceiling most of the time. I don't think they need to be ornamental like a light fixture.

I agree with @mytwo cents with blending into the ceiling.

a white fan with a white ceiling, a dark fan with a natural wood ceiling, etc.

get the hardware that you like. follow your design and treat each space to your style.

Again ceiling fans are practical but not something you want to draw attention to. Let them blend into the ceiling.

I agree but I will comment on the hardware color , i guarantee once you do that you will be back here trying to match it to all the other hardware in the spaces and then in the not too distant future the gold toned hardware phase will be dead . Think brass and how it became dated .There are literally 100s of posts here of peole trying to make all these different gold tones work together

All of ours are ORB with various tones of wood, same as last house, and I find they go well with everything. I can’t stand white ceiling fans for my own homes (warm toned decor, warm wall colors, eclectic mix of styles, mixed metals) — I think they actually stand out more than darker ones or nickel. We bought a house once with white fans and replaced them all.

That said, it’s hard to say for sure without seeing your house, paint colors, flooring, other decor, etc, and what style of ceiling fans. There’s no universal answer.

I also do not like the look of all white ceiling fans, and my family insists on having them, so I’m willing so pay more to find one we like. Either way, I wouldn’t do champagne metals anywhere. You can definitely mix metals, but choose ones that are more classic and will last for you. Depending on your home style, I would choose polished nickel, oil rubbed bronze or unlacquered brass. If in a modern home, chrome or maybe brushed metals may work better for you. I have heard that brass is waning in popularity, so unless it is something you really love, I would not use it.

White fans and no light in the fan if possible. The less attention the fan draws, the better

Alternatively, if I went with black fans and black hardware

I don't think the fans need to match the rest of the hardware.

One is hardware and permanent. The other is electrical and not so permanent. Kinda' like thinking that the finish on the toaster has to match the cabinet pulls has to match the swinging door hardware has to match the stove & refrigerator has to match the sink.

A ceiling fan is more a part of the decor and can do its own thing in the overall decor scheme of the room that it is in.

They don't all have to match, ya know. I have white fans in the office and one bedroom. A Minka distressed wood style in my bedroom and a sleek modern black fan in the vaulted LR.

This is a white and brass fan I got for the bedroom:

Mine has a dimmable light so the bottom is white with brass rim. I was limited by budget. The blades on this one are plastic which I didn’t like at first, but I got over it. It’s a nice balance of disappearing into the white ceiling and a touch of brass. But there is a lot of plastic in the fan. I like it fine, much better than an all-white fan.

I got it because I was looking up at the fan from the bed, and the old plain white fan was just too ugly to be staring at it. Most of the time the fan is on while I am in the room, so you just see the middle which looks like a regular round light with a brass rim. (In the case of the fan at the link above, it would look like a small-ish brass disc.)

If you want this fan with the light fixture, I think you have to order the model with the light fixture instead of the regular model. I don’t think you can add the light later. The light isn’t that great - I just wanted to avoid having more lamps in the bedroom.

IMO white ceiling fans are often shiny and can look like cheap plastic if you are not careful. Nicer white ceiling fans lean towards a modern/contemporary vibe. There are lots of beautiful options with light woods and warm metal tones that should work well with champagne. I personally would prefer an ORB or brushed nickel over black.
