Do a search for L-shaped closet systems that incorporate two levels of hanging rods as well as shelves for your shoes and/or folded clothes. This was the first picure that popped up that illustrates what I mean. I've used this basic idea in my own small closets, though I added boxes above the top shelf, had the shelves much closer together, and didn't waste an inch of space as they did here.

Let me see if I'm understanding - You just need something to go in the open space with the black arrow? What kinds of items do you need to store - folded shirts, socks, belts - say more. Do you like the white stackable drawers you have to the left that are on the floor? Would more of those work in the empty space?

Could you hang something like this from the bottom bar so it is like having open front shelves to place things on?

Off season clothes (winter coats, swim suits, etc) can be boxed up and stored somewhere that is less important. I store things under beds and in a basement mud room closet. Definitely need a better picture of the space. Are you sharing the closet with anyone? And it always best to start with a good purge. Try on anything you have not worn this year, and if it doesn’t fit, or you don’t love the way it looks on you, get rid of it. I do this at the end of every odd numbered year, especially since I no longer need the work wardrobe I had in the past.

I have purged. I am storing leggings, t shirts and PJ’s. Closet is shared with my husband. He gets the top half of the bar for his clothes (mostly work clothes). Rest of space is mine.

I don’t like the white containers as I am trying to get it off the floor. I tried the hanging organizers and the 3 cube ones are too long for the space.

I have a small dresser for socks/underwear for myself and hubby.

First off, I feel for you because I have rented plenty of places where I have had to get clever with using every inch of closet space. Your husband's clothes hang at least 3/4 of the way to the floor. Then you want to store clothes under his but not on the floor. This leaves you with maybe 12" of storage space if you are lucky. Maybe you can think about other areas of the closet to access.

What is in the containers on the top shelf of the right side of the closet? Are they things you use every day? Are you tall enough to reach that shelf? Perhaps you can store those items on the floor and find better organization on that top shelf for your PJ's, leggings, and T-shirts?

For the top shelf items to potentially store on the floor, I hear you don't want to have something sitting on the floor because of cleaning. But, if they are sitting on the floor, can't you just sweep in front of the boxes and have not need to clean underneath them?

What is on the inside of your closet door? I have the elfa basket system on the inside of three of my closets and you can swap out the baskets for deep ones. There are other less expensive basket systems you could use too. Perhaps your socks and underwear could go in baskets on the inside of the door and some of your dresser space could be used for your t-shirts and PJs?

divide by season. store out of season in under bed boxes from walmart. i hang my out fits together on one hanger, jeans and tops, dresses and sweater or jacket. i also found hanging fabric storage racks at thrift store; narrow one for everyday shoes and bigger one for folded sweaters and pjs and bras. i bought square small bins at walmart for leisure wear etc to go on high shelves. dress shoes go in their shoe boxes stacked and labeled for occasional wear.

nothing is on the floor......too difficult to find. also thinking of getting clothes zipper bag to use in other bedroom closet, but first is to buy all matching hangers on amazon that are rubber...seems to be a new thing. then get rid of old, too small/big, shabby clothes. purge hubby stuff too. use decorative boxes you can leave out to store socks, scarves, belts....

i have hubby try on his all clothes too to purge during sports events commercials on tv....make it a game as it is weary work but rewarding when you get done.

my two cents.

Show the BEDROOM that goes with the inefficient closet. Do a drawing of both spaces with all dimensions, feet and inches. That means for the bedroom, entry, windows, walls etc. What is the ceiling height in the closet and all the wall dimension and opening TO that closet.

It looks like the lower rod is too low to hang even a tee shirt on, so it's not useful as is.

Two ideas;

1- Remove the lower hanging rod. Add one or two short chests of drawers - plastic, wood, your choice, to store pjs, leggings, and tee shirts. Move ALL miscellaneous stuff that's on the floor now to clear boxes or clear zippered storage bags on the shelves.

2- Change your pj, leggings, and tee shirt storage from boxes and drawers to hangers. Hang a tee shirt on a hanger, hold it up so that the hem is off the ground by 3-6 inches (vacuum cleaner height). Move the bottom rod so that the tee shirt hangers clear the floor. You will need to raise the shelf and top rod up, too, so that the men's shirt tails clear the lower rod gracefully with an inch or two to spare. Some fiddling and adjustment to rod heights will be needed. Move ALL miscellaneous stuff that's on the floor now to clear boxes or clear zippered storage bags on the shelves.

I was thinking of these baskets from Ikea but I don't have a wall on both sides to secure it too....

I have this thing in my closet to maximize storage and it is awesome! Its only 19inches tall so should fit in your space! My closet is an 8 foot long reach in that I share with my husband, but I have 2/3 of the space and he has 1/3. For me I have my jeans in two of the cubbies year round. The other two are seasonal- so shorts and casual tops in summer and sweaters in winter. (I store out of season things in under bed bins.) I hang my tops and skirts and pants (folded over hanger) from the bottom hanging bar. You wouldn't be able to use the hanging bar in this particular closet setup, but you can take it with you when you move and a future closet may have space for you to fully utilize the function of this piece. It's also great for a kids closet to help them be able to reach things themselves when they're little.
