I think that you need to provide more information in order to receive helpful suggestions. For example, what is the overall style/feel you are looking for in the room (and house)? I also think that you should add photos showing the other walls in the room. Do you have a budget set?

If you truly cannot move the TV, I would replace it with a Frame TV that is smaller than your current TV that is sized to work with the proportions of your fireplace. I would leave the fireplace alone- it’s not really the problem here.

^ agree, a TV that is more flush with the wall will help it look more modern and less looming/bulky - looks like you have very traditional trim throughout the room so make sure any changes here w/the FP fit

It shouldn't be difficult to remove the existing surround and mantle. Also, should be hard to have a carpenter rebuild you a new surround and mantle depending on the style you want and the style of your current home.

Leave fireplace as it goes with the rest of your trim. TV is far too large for space and most definitely the problem. Perhaps build a frame for TV to match fireplace trim and set flush against wall if there’s no other location available.

I'm on the side of leaving the fireplace as is. I would suggest getting an "art" tv for over the fireplace. I would also suggest buying one is a slightly smaller size. My daughter has an art tv and it's really nice. It might even be cheaper than redoing the fireplace.

Problem is the TV not the fireplace.

Please show photos of the rest of the room so people can make suggestions on fireplace style, possible change in layout. Visual information is missing.

Also, since you basically have two giant black rectangles on that wall, put some birch logs in the fireplace and a basket of them on the hearth to pull the eye down from the oversized TV screen if it has to stay.*

*Have to say, I'm often amazed at how many people will make expensive structural changes but won't consider getting a different, smaller TV.

We’re interested in a fireplace revamp and hoping for some ideas.

We need a clue. Have no idea what direction you are thinking. Depending on where you want to go, the fireplace revamp may need to include replacing all of the crown and other moldings in the room.

If you want to keep a large TV in this room and if the fireplace wall is the only spot for it, then the fireplace needs to be gone.

It is classic and echoes the trim at the ceiling. Anything done to “modernize” it will look awkward. As others have said, it’s the huge tv that ruins the look.

I need to see the whole room and I garee the FP is great the TV there not so much.

I love everything about your fireplace…except the TV over it! Keep exploring other TV placement options.

My first thought was to suggest taking away the mantel and the bricks and doing an understated tile on the whole wall between the doors. It would work better with the room, and it would make the TV feel in scale.

However, your house has very formal millwork -- I mean, you have 12-14 inches of crown moulding up there! It would be hard to end the tile naturally, and a broad tiling would look more modern than the more traditional woodwork. So that's a little hard. Nemme mess around a bit.

Leave the FP alone but paint the entire wall (minus woodwork) the color of the brick. The TV will fade and the fireplace will maintain its glory.

Ok, here's the wall all one color, as though you tiled the whole thing, or maybe did a painted drywall treatment (depending on the type of insert):

and here's the same thing with a single wide mantle, maybe a white board.

Probably the latter fits your house a bit better, but both look better than what you have.

@acm: You did a great mockup, but it just confirms what everyone has been saying: TV overwhelms any style of fireplace. oversized TV = problem, not fireplace.

I like the fireplace too, but you don’t. Sometimes I wonder why people still have fireplaces since they interfere so much with the TV….

Anyway, that whole wall should probably become a TV wall. It would be nice if you could just slip a wood box over the fireplace to keep it intact for resale, but make the box look and act like a bookcase or TV background. Probably impractical especially if the fireplace is a part of the structure and not an add-on.

Could you safely remove and store the mantel and surround so that it could be put back later?

TVs may not be the same 20 years into the future.
