Love the mirror; seems a shame to turn it sideways.

That mirror has a definite orientation. If it's turned it will obviously be on its side--the dangly festoon thingies will look wrong if they defy gravity and it will look like a mistake. (Which it would be.)

Anyway, the first fixture. The one with the ball is too modern for the mirror. And the lights would look better flanking a tall mirror instead of a squatty one (meaning, keep the mirror in its proper vertical orientation with either of those fixtures!).

I agree about the orientation of the mirror but neither of those lights give enough light for a bathroom . Since he is going a bit over the top 30"s I would look for something with gold and crystals something like this for much better light Please tell him not to turn the mirror

Not sure that will be as lovely a mirror when hung horizontally. : ) and unless he is quite short, it will need to be hung too high above a 36 inch tall vanity. Perhaps save it for another spot in the home, where it can be hung to suit its proportion and detail?

Either light is fine, it's personal preference..but truly , much depends the entire composition- lights, vanity , placement alongside mirror.

Knowing if a single sink, length of vanity, style of vanity and more info would help.

Lets just say proportions matter.....

Update from my neighbor-he’s going to hang the mirror vertically. His vanity is 48” and is going to be white shaker style with one sink. His fixtures are going to be bronze. Jan Moyer, I picture it looking much like the picture you showed above.

Smart choice on the hang!

My advice? Scale drawing of the entire space. At least one inch to a foot. WITH the selected sconces. That is a narrow oval : )
