I think I would take out the current hanging rack and run a hanging rack along one long wall. You could install shelves for shoes or Ikea Hemnes or Bissa shoe cabinets on the bottom half of the wall. Here are some inspiration pictures. The green one is set up for children’s clothing, so your coats would extend further into the closet space, but the picture gives you an idea. The other photo keeps the hanging at the back and uses the long wall for shoe racks.

You could also install something like this on one long wall. Do you have a Container Store or other Closet Design company. I think consultations are free. Take advantage of them and see what they can offer.
