My new KitchenAid drys my plastic items. It's not an issue that irritates me one way or the other.

Bosch and Miele use an entirely different technology for drying. It works. The science is very interesting. But know that it will require changing out the drying package material every few years. It's loses it ability to create the reaction that causes the drying.

The Miele models with the feature that cracks open the door for the last 20 minutes of the cycle works very well to dry everything ... unless the tupperware flipped over and filled with water!!

I have a Bosch 800, now 7 1/2 years old…so before any real innovations for drying Bosch developed, like Chrystal Dry. The machine does a super job of cleaning AND drying…except for the bottoms of plastic containers, which of course are upside down on the rack. No biggy. We just leave the door open a bit, to let the steam escape, and let the wet bottoms evaporate naturally. Doesn’t take very long at all.

I understand the Chrystal Dry works very well.

I have a Siemens dishwasher with Crystal Dry. It works well - especially on the cycles with a slightly longer drying step. The mineral does NOT need to be replaced.

My KitchenAid (2017) in my island had a slow diverter seal leak this year and caused damage to my wood floor on the backside. Hard to know it was occurring as there was no water at the front. Replaced it with a Miele dishwasher….more expensive but far superior cleaning and drying of everything, including plastics. If you have a KA, look into the Class Action Settlement….

In CR's testing, the $1500 Bosch SHXM88Z75N received a recommended rating and dried very well. HD customers think so too (search "dry"). It has "CrystalDry" to help drying. Unfortunately, it appears to be discontinued though the Lowes website shows its available there. The $970 SHPM78Z55N also has CrystalDry but, oddly, its drying was not top-notch, though it's still a recommended model. The $820 SHPM65Z55N also dried very well in CR's test -- by popping open the door -- though it missed a recommended rating by one point.

bosch seems to work fine. we usually pop it open to dry after running if we are there. we have mostly switched to pyrex containers though.

I have a miele with the auto open door and it dries plastic extremely well unless it has a lip or something that catches water. Both of my daughters have a higher end Bosch 800 series with the crystal dry. My daughter with small children uses alot of plastics and they are not as dry as the Miele. They are definitely drier than past dishwashers she has had in rentals that use a drying element, but I would opt for the Miele if I was buying a new one.

I too have stopped using plastic containers so not issues but my Bosch is 16 yrs old and still was drying the plastic stuff well.There are jet dry products that are supposed to help with plasitc drying. I love my Bosch the quick wash cycle is fabulous I run a catering biz from my home and often 6-8 loads a day

No plastic anything in the dishwasher. Do it by hand and drain it on the sideboard.

I have a Bosch, and it dries plastic well, depending on the load.......The more plastic in the load, the more likely it is not to dry properly. If I have 1 or 2 plastic containers in a load that is otherwise metal, glass, and ceramic, it dries well. If I have 6 or 7 plastic containers in a load, they won't dry as well - this makes sense since Bosch dishwashers dry via condensation, rather than heat. I like that because it means I don't need to worry about what items I put on which rack. But since it dries because of the temperature differences between the items and the walls of the dishwasher, more plastic means the temperature is different and they get less dry.

I'm not sure anyone can say that, since microwave ovens and standard ovens do different things (i.e. produce different end products). It's not the same as comparing washing dishes via 2 different methods.

Debate over plastic aside, if your dishwasher isn’t drying everything, here’s a internet tip. When the cycle is done hang a terry cloth hand towel inside against the door. It actually works.

My aging , 300 $$ cheap, Ge DW, cleans to immaculate, no spots on a glass, dries bone dry anything , and the cycle is under an hour.

It stays here until it croaks. : )

wdcruise, the issue is plastic leaches chemicals. If you're heating something in plastic in a microwave, those chemicals leach into the food. Wash and dry by hand, put food o a plate to microwave, store in a glass container with a lid.

Thanks, all! Super helpful tips. My 2 and 4 year old boys have already broken enough glass dishes, but it’s a good reminder about trying to wash those by hand.

Good news. Many brands have adapted their drying to dry even plastics. Bad news only a few can actually dry plastics.

I've said this elsewhere here, but CrystalDry performance (and even add Sanitize Rinse option) reminds me of dry results found KitchenAid dishwashers from 1968 through 1983 (KDSIC16 series models through KDSPIC18 series models)
