Watts has nothing to do with it. Need decide how many lumens.

1. What are the dimensions and height of the room?
2. What are the size and shape of the dining room table?
3. Will the light over the table be the only light in the room?

Ok, lumens it is. I’m moving into a senior community and my apartment dining room has 3 walls, no windows. Two walls are 12’9” and one wall is 9’. Ceilings are 9’. Table is 54” round. Light over table will be only light in the room unless I add wall sconces. I would like to get an idea of what to look for in a light fixture that will give me good light, not only for dining (which can be controlled with a dimmer switch), but also for playing cards and working puzzles. Thank you.

• Your dining room is 13' x 9' = 117 square feet.
• 30-40 lumens/square foot are acceptable for a dining room.
• You would need between 117 x 30 = 3500 and 117 x 40 = 4700 lumens to illuminate the dining room.
• A 9-watt LED bulb emits about 800 lumens; An 11-watt LED bulb emits about 1100 lumens and a 13-watt LED bulb emits about 15-watt LED bulb emits about 1600 lumens.
• So you'd need around three 11-watt LED bulbs to illuminate the dining room.

• Your dining table is 42" in diameter or ( ( ( 42 / 2 ) ** 2 ) x 3.14 ) / 144 = 9.6 square feet.
• Assuming you wanted to illuminate the table to kitchen brightness, you'd want 70 lumens/square foot.
• 9.6 x 70 = 672 lumens.
• So a fixture with a 9-watt LED bulb (800 lumens) would be sufficient to illuminate the dining room table.
• I would use an 11-watt, 3000K LED bulb with a dimmer (e.g., Lutron LED+ dimmer).
