Ryobi vs Kobalt Battery Mower
Good-day a couple of weeks ago my Gas powered mower blew up.I needed to mow my lawn but was not about to go buy a new mower right now as they are at their peak prices I borrowed my brother-in-laws Ryobi battery self propelled which has a 5.0 battery it did a fair job my grass was a bit high so it was definitely not as powerful as my gas mower with that being said i did like it but I know with the grass being a bit high it did drain the battery more quickly i turned the self propel off to conserve battery.I got about 1/2 of my large back done before I had to recharge I do have another charger and a 2.6 40V battery that i have for my ryobi weed trimmer i used that but it was quickly drained so I wound up having to charge the 5.0 one more time.
with that being said i do like the battery powered I really cant foresee myself using the self propelled all the time but better to have than not to have I also will have to not let my grass get too high before cutting i'm sure i will still need to buy a back up battery to use when this one dies no matter what size battery i get i cannot see it doing my whole back on one charge maybe under optimal circumstances not too high of grass and limited self propelled i can barely squeak by so with that being said that brings me to my question there are two mowers i am looking at that i am on the fence about
Ryobi Ry401260 $479.00 this is a 40V with a 8AH battery this has dual blade though i'm not sure if the dual blade would drain the battery more quickly
I am leaning towards ryobi for the fact that I already have a charger and albeit smaller battery with the 2.6 but I do have the second charger
Kobalt KMP 6080-06 is the second mower this is on sale for $499 right now this is an 80V 6AH mower im thinking this would be slightly more powerful and with it being an 80V vs 40V im thinking run time would be possibly about 15 minutes more it does have a couple of interesting features most noted is it does have a battery indicator on the handle which i really like but thats not really enough to push me over the edge.once i factor in the price of another charger that little bit of extra power and run time may not be worth it.
I'm kind of on the fence between these two there is a $20 difference
I would like the added power of the kobalt but with the dual cut blade system of the ryobi would this kind of be a push with dual blades versus a single blade mower?

Yes the corded mower will never need recharging but if is similar to my corded trimmer, it can be done but it is difficult. The first several times I use the trimmer to trim a bushes, the session ended with the cord being cut.
On the other hand I have had a corded chain saw for nearly 15 years, While I have nicked the cord a couple of times, I have never cut the cord.
I would assume a mower is more like the trimmer. In use there is a lot of movement and relocation. I would suspect there is a high probability that you will be frequently cutting the cord to the mower.
I see an battery mower some what like an battery power car. If you are going down to the corner store or buying groceries a couple of miles from home, it would perform satisfactorily. If you are doing a big yard, or putting on any mileage, you are going to be disappointed. ( In the Raleigh/Durham area, you could not drive across the area, make a couple side trip, and have a decent safety margin left on the charge to guarantee you could make it home.) Original Author3 years agoThanks Guys I rarely need to cut my back and front at the same time as the back grows twice as fast as the front. I kind of let my back get away from me a bit as my gas mower blew up on me a couple of weeks ago so the extra high grass actually most likely contributed to the draining of the battery that much more quicker!plus i was using the self propelled in the beginning just to kind of test it out a bit I borrowed my brother in laws with a 5.0 its a few years old.I probably would have needed a second battery in the back anyway but probably just bareley.I'm thinking the ryobi with the multi cut blades would be more along the lines of having A 6.0 battery in a single blade mower! ryobi probably gives you that 8.0 battery with the mower because it drains the battery quicker with the multi cut blades!
I can go back to gas i just have limited space with all my other equipment especially my large snowblower so the convenience of the battery is ideal.My snowblower is a must with gas living up in the northeast i could never run an electric/battery snowblower i would miss the power too much the mower i could get away with so one less thing to take up space would certainly help- 3 years ago
I've tried a corded mower and did not like it. The yard had obstacles that hung up the cord. It was a pain in the butt. After that I got a Black & Decker battery powered mower. That was great for many years. They had a recall and I ended up paying about $50 but it was a completely new mower. They removed my old handle and bolted on a new mower underneath. That was well worth it. Some years later my wife hit something that blew a fist sized chunk of the plastic deck out between the blade and mower underneath. About the same time Hurricane Harvey hit us in Rockport, so I ended up buying into the EGO family of battery powered tools. First buy was the chainsaw for the downed trees. Then I bought a mower for my sister in law, string trimmer, leaf blower, and a self propelled mower for myself. I have never had a problem mowing front and back yards on one charge even with tall, dense, St Augustine (front is more dense in full sun). I also love the chainsaw, blower, and string trimmer.

Costco has the Greenworks brand for 80V mower, edger, and leaf blower. If you have experience with this brand, can you please share your thoughts for 1/2 acre of work? I plan to do the lawn work myself (NO experience). Or should I forget this thought and use a lawn service?

A Naka, you might want to open a new topic with your question, because that's going a much different direction than this topic will go. When you start it, please tell us where you live, what kind of grass you have, and post a picture of the yard from across the street. Lawn care is not hard, and mowing is the least hard of all of lawn care.

Original Author3 years agoA corded mower really woud not work for me either too many obstacles as well.
I wound up getting the kobalt 80v 6ah.I really wanted a mower with a steel deck the ego is a fine machine and greenworks has an 80v but the greenworks was just too steep for me I wound up getting 20% off the kobalt on top of the sale price which put the mower at $399 i was able to get 6 month financing as well so with the additional 3 year protection plan(i almost always get it with power tools its paid off a few times)total cost was $525.The greenworks was 649 & the 56v ego was i believe 549.I would have preffered the greenworks from a ergonomic stand point but i could not see spending roughly an extra $300 or so on that.i get alot of stray branches and stuff on both my front and back and dont always see them even though plastic decks are tough in alot of models today i prefer a steel deck.as far as growth goes my back grows quicker than tge front and thick so i was looking for something with a little more power than a 40v when i borrowed my brother in laws ryobi it struggled at times i dont think the 80v will struggle with my grass like the 40v did.I have 30 days with the kobalt if the greenworks drops i may take a looknat it but i dont think it will drop far enough down for me to bring the kobalt back i feel like in my heart i made the right choice.yes i already had a ryobi battery albeit a 2.6 but i think i would have grabbed a second battery next year anyway as a 2.6 would have drained too quickly with a 40v i cant see myself using the self propoelled all that much as my lawn is relativley flat but its better to get it with it and not use it then to get it without it and need it.i only have one more cut most likeley next year ill look for a package for a kobalt tool for a hedger or something to get my second battery.I think i made the right choice on this one!

John, I guess you didn't understand my last post so let me rephrase what voltage means again. A higher Voltage motor does not mean more power, and a higher voltage motor will only use thinner wire for the motor windings so the motor can be made smaller. The higher voltage used on your 80 volt mower will also have a higher electrical potential and will be much easier to knock you on your ass it you happen to get shocked.
Low voltage is safer for the operator, and the only disadvantage is every wire used will be thicker meaning heavier components and a heavier piece of equipment, but doesn't mean more power. What makes a motor more powerful is the number of wire windings in the motor. More windings increases the magnetic field which increases torque which increases power, not the voltage used.
I can stop a small 240 volt fan which draws 1/8 ampere with my with my finger with ease. A 24 volt motor that produces the same power as the 240 volt fan motor will draw 1 1/4 amps. The 24 volt fan won't blow any more air than the 240 volt motor but which voltage will kill you?
Think of voltage as the pressure at a water faucet. Think of the amount of water coming out of the faucet as amperage. If all the faucet can supply is only one gallon per minute of water doubling the pressure will still only give you one gallon of water per minute. To get more water you need to increase the size of the water pipe, and can be related to the size of the electrical wire of a motor, only then can you get more water. It's the amperage that determines if a motor has more power not the voltage.
