Should I pick my watermelon?

I just picked one too soon. A small yellow melon, it was almost ripe. The tendril nearest wasn't dry but the stem was nearly brown. It had been hanging down from one of my large raised beds but about a week or so ago fell to the ground. I decided to check. So disappointed.

Now I have a Moon & Stars, the only one on that vine and the oldest melon in the garden. It has a bright yellow bottom and two tendrils are dry that go to the main stem but the closest ones are still green.

I can never do the thump test, obviously, because I did it with the yellow one and was so wrong. Does anyone grow melons and what would you do? I've been growing them for a long time, many years but it's always hit or miss for me. Even if I wait for that tenderil to be brown, sometimes the melon is overripe.
