I would never follow the cultural directions on a plastic tag for any plant! - The information on most plant tags is vague at best and some of it is completely wrong. It is easy to do a little research on your own to find out what any plant needs to grow and thrive. I get a kick out of some people and their attachment to their plant tags. A friend told me that their perennial garden in the winter looked like a chipmunk graveyard with all of the plant tags stuck into the ground - they thought the tags looked like little headstones.

It is always good to have some cultural information to start with but you can't beat first hand experience, learning from your mistakes and successes with plants. It should be a learning experience!

Similarly, and something I'm grumpy and stumped about, is my favorite type of lavender, which is supposed to be full sun, with low water. I lose a couple each year for the last 5 years! I had so many.... and my gardener thinks they need less water... but then I point him toward the most vigorous 3 lavender plants, right next to our small patch of front lawn (they get the same water the lawn does) and in dappled shade from a tree almost the whole day. They are huge and lovely. Go figure.

(In reading this back, it doesn't even seem funny. I just feel stupid!)

Go figure is right! I have Lady's Mantle that thrive in one spot and die in another with what (I think) are the same conditions. It's a mystery.
