Gasp! That flower looks like 'the dark solid green' hostas around my house! They are quite fragrant. I was just joking with Husband how there are so many varieties and names on this site that we may as well make up a name for all the hostas we have. I think this one has become Freddie White.

It could very well be Royal Standard. It has the right shape of leaves, has a little sheen and has the right number of vein pairs.

Smell it in the late day or early evening. If it is Royal Standard, that is when it smells the best. If it doesn't smell good then, it's probably not Royal Standard. It's not the hosta with the highest intensity fragrance, in my opinion. However, it is nice and it is noticeable.

i say crumby.. because as i recall the color should be somewhere between what you see here.. and the apple green of its grandmother plantaginea... the plant that gave her genes to all the fragrant flowered hosta.. and the white color..

you can tell the pic is off.. since blue hosta dont look like that either..

back in the olden days.... when i was a kid ....you either had plantagines with 6 inch flowers.. or you had this one ... plus one or two of the undulata clan... that was the 60s and 70s in hosta land ...

bkay - we'll try to remember to smell it in the evening - I thought most things had good scent in early morning but evening is good too :-) I like the big flowers on whatever-this-is and that it is blooming so late. The clump has got too big though - there should be a good path to the shed door and a good path heading to the SW corner past the left side of the hosta, but the hosta is now so big that I need to shrink it by cutting pieces out of it on those sides next spring. That should give me divisions to plant elsewhere. For the most part, I'm not very concerned with knowing the variety name as I plant them in places that need certain sizes and colors - most of the existing hostas are now big enough to provide divisions to meet my needs so I don't need to know names to buy them :-) But this one made me curious... (I suspect Freddie White may become its nickname!)

The reason it's fragrant at the end of the day is so that it can attract moths to pollinate it in the evening.

Also, fragrant hosta bloom late in the season. My fragrants finished a couple of weeks ago, but mine come up early due to my climate.
