Mix art styles?

I’m considering swapping out the mirror on this wall with a piece of art because I think the wall looks weak or empty. I have an Audubon engraving that was given to me in the same room but I lean more towards contemporary art. Would a more contemporary piece on the mirror wall clash with the more traditional Audubon piece?

Can you post a photo of the Audubon piece as well as what you are thinking of replacing the mirror with?

Would help to see a photo of the piece, but 99% chance it will look great, especially if you frame it right and if you are willing to possibly tweak other elements in the room (like pillows or lighting or coffee table styling...

(the black and white cat with the black and white cat bed looks right at home in the room, so why wouldn't modern art?)

What is the mirror reflecting on the dining room wall?

Thanks, everyone. The Audubon piece is over the fireplace. @mytwo cents, the mirror in the dining room (on the right) points to the chandelier.

Follow up question: You can’t see it here but I live on the marsh in Savannah. I feel Ike a painting of a marsh would not make sense because the real one is in view from this room. Agree? Disagree?

agree -- but there are exceptions.

it would need to be a very dramatic and striking marsh painting by a local artist or a particualrly artistic abstraction of a marsh scene-- something really worth it.

My question about the mirror is this: When I look at your photo, I see in the mirror over the sofa a reflection of something long Am I seeing a reflection of a chandelier?

I am thinking when you put a new artwork on the wall above the sofa maybe you want to ove the mirror into the dining room to reflect it.

@mytwo cents ahh, I see. It’s reflecting a sculpture on the opposite wall.

This is the adjacent dining room. Already has a huge mirror. It’s what you see in the top photo.

Is that a mural wallpaper around the fireplace? I would love to see it!

Yes. I’m pretty proud of it. Here’s another pic: pardon the dog toy

Thinking of replacing the dining room chandelier with something more interesting

Yes should be proud of it. It looks really fabulous! Perfect for that space.

You should be proud of it! I see all sorts of options for making a mix work in your space. I was going to say that the 1% impossible is probably if what you have in mind is piece of 60s Pop Comic Book, but now that I've seen the wall sculpture and the dog toy, even that's not out of bounds.

Have you picked out a piece to replace the mirror with? It sounds like you are thinking of a painting of marsh? I think the size is more important than the subject.

(My apologies to the dog for thinking that might be a cat.)

Here are a couple of possible contenders to replace the mirror. I think I want them to be quite large

I think either of those would be much better than the mirror and would look fine with the piece over your fireplace. Very large pieces of art command attention. I love the look of huge paintings.

Thank you all. You’ve been a big help

Absolutely fine to replace the mirror. The pieces you hung don't even seem that comtemporary to me. My feeling is to get artwork you love, that makes you sing. Forget if it tells the right story for your location or if the colors are off. If you start collecting pieces you love you will end up seeing a throughline that makes them work well together. Your fireplace wall is stunning. Remember wallpaper can always be framed and hung as artwork too.

I think either will work. One thing that will help is to use the pillows now on the sofa on the chairs.

The 1st painting you are considering as so much blue I think it might be nice to switch the rug to something very contemporary with blue. (And put the sofa pillows on the chairs)

Pottery Barn, but just a direction, not this particular one necessarily

For the second one you are considering I'd probably keep the rug but change the sofa pillows to something white and feathery

and maybe get a lighter wood coffee table

    just fooling around....

    I really like these ideas

Awesome idea on the photoshopping to test it! Thanks

Art and the way it is mixed and displayed is subjective, so everyone will have a different opinion. Lots of things will work with what you currently have. Just make sure, if you are only doing one piece, that it is large enough. People tend to go with pieces that are too small.

When you go to an art gallery, do you think "oh my, all these different styles and periods of art clash with each other"? Art is not static. It breathes life into the space it's in. If you tend to like all different styles of art, they will find a happy home together, and make you smile every time you see your collection.

People who hang art works in museums spend considerable time arranging art works so they don't diminish each other or give viewers unpleasant experiences. It's not ''ánything goes.'''

I have never bought a piece of art t go with a room. If you love the pieces they go together thats it. I hung art in agallery for many shows and not once did we think about the experience some one migh find offensive,in fact sometmes pieces were hung to get a reaction.I truly believe art you love is perfect anywhere This is your home not a gallery just a place you love.
