New Master Bath Layout

A few months ago I posted 3 options for my master bath renovation and got some good comments and recommendations but I had nagging reservations about the design. I think I have finally come up with something that meets my goals of:

  • Opening up the bathroom area by eliminating the one-piece acrylic shower in the corner by the window
  • Having a larger, curbless, doorless shower while maintaining privacy
  • A pony wall at the toilet for increased privacy and the added bonus of side entry for wheelchair access
  • Keeping a tub.

My husband has checked the plumbing and electrical and he says he can make the necessary changes. Are there any major flaws in this design that I am missing?

I've still looking at theNeptune Wind tub because it is skirted and has a little deeper soaking depth (14 3/4") while being fairly efficient water-wise and the tapered end opens up wider access to the shower and opposite corner. But I've got room for at least 3' x 6' for a tub, so I should have plenty of options.

The main things I still have to decide on are the shower divider and the pony wall. For the shower divider, I want a tiled wall, not glass, for privacy and easier maintenance. I have 9' ceilings and wanted to have a post at the end so it is strong and I can add grab bars. I have plenty of room to make the shower as wide as I want but with a solid divider especially, the wider I make the shower, the more the divider comes into the room. I was thinking 40-42" wide. Also, any thoughts on how tall and wide to make the divider? We will extend the waterproofing well beyond the shower, maybe to the entire back half of the room.

I want to make the pony wall as wide as possible to block the toilet, but I don't want it to be a choke point there. I've got 61" on the vanity side of the room. The toilet is almost 15" wide and center has to be at least 15" off the wall so the far edge of the toilet will be 22 1/2" off the side wall, which is about the same as the vanity countertop. I put a box up to simulate a pony wall 29" wide, leaving a 32" wide opening, which is the minimum I'd like to go for wheelchair access. It didn't seem as restricted as I thought. That would extend 6 1/2" past the side of the toilet. Could I drop down to 27" making a 34" opening and extending only 4 1/2" past the toilet/countertop?

I've read that 40" is a good height for a pony wall. Does that sound reasonable?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This has been in planning for years and now that I have a plan that I *think* addresses all my concerns, I'd really like to get going on this!
