I really dislkke floor outlets since they are totally designed for a permanent furniture layout. As for where that is for you to decide where your furniture is going. It might be bettrer to do lots of pot lights and then just plugs in th wall where you can set a chair or soafa with table lamps. i aslo like arc lamps where you want light more in the center of a space .

You have to work out where your furniture will be first. We mocked up where our sofa would be and then put the outlets just to the sides since I spend time on the sofa with my laptop plugged in.

Agree, you need to do an approx mock up of your furniture and place the floor outlets where you may want lamps. It doesn't have to be perfect, lamp cords can run under a recliner, love seat, sofa and still be plugged in without the cords showing or creating a tripping hazard.

I love my floor outlets circa 1955. All of the furniture in my living room is floated, there is none on the walls (one 'wall' being floor to ceiling windows). I also have a weakness for lamps and can always find one I love ;) I have lamp tables at each end of a sofa that can use the same two plug outlet, cords discreetly under the sofa. Facing in to that arrangement is a love seat and an angled chair. Another lamp table wouldn't have worked well between the two but I could place a really great floor lamp there and appreciate that opportunity for lovely light.

Recommend you check out the cordless, battery-powered lamps at www.modernlantern.com. These are very different from the things you see on amazon or wayfair. I love mine and SO GLAD I didn't have to put floor outlets in.

I completely agree with mocking up the furniture layout as best you can. We built a lakefront home and faced the same dilemma as this, and ended up with a couple floor outlets that line up with the edges of our sectional.

If you can get a rough idea of where your seating will be located you can choose the placement. I'd suggest erring toward the "inside" of the room for placement, as you can run cords under couches, side tables, etc rather than ending up with outlets in open floor areas that will be underfoot in traffic patterns.

I spent a lot of time laying it all out on paper, but once I moved into the new house I ended up shifting the furniture arrangement a few feet to the right, so my more important outlet ended up under the large oriental rug. I was able to use the second outlet, but only by cheating and running an extension cord under one corner of the rug to reach the one table lamp I have in the space. There is little traffic over that corner so not worried about a fire risk, but not the ideal situation, specially after all my planning and measuring!

One more thing -- we planned for black outlets to match our hardware and darker floors. The electrician couldn't source them immediately, so used brass. We just got in the black ones and they look fabulous on our floors. Make sure to spec the best color for your home.
