Help Me Redesign My Bedroom

Hi

I would like a new bed, bedding, rug, seating area etc… I’m trying to create a warmer cozier space building off the fireplace. What would you recommend?

Taller lamps and drapery panels on all the windows/doors

a rug under your seating area.

    less wall art.

    TV off the FP

Seating area in front of FP

Bed does not fit any other wall. window is too low on the seating area for the bed

I would buy an old fashioned bed

Try something like an antelope rug

Get plug in sconces for the wall

Bring more and larger plants into the room and don't use a seascape for art over your bed. Maybe instead think about some fiber art

Then I would put pillows on the chairs that match the ottoman but have brick and flame colors in them.

I'd put a separate round fluffy rug under the chairs and ottoman.

Add a floor lamp at the right-hand chair

So I wouldn't necessarily use all those pieces exactly because all together they might be too much but I'd be looking to make those changes. On the wall to the left of near the seating I might put art that favored red and orange and had a brass frame. But not water!

This is probably too much for the bedding but I'd be looking for these colors

thank you for the photos but, these items are too colorful for me. I'm much more of a soft neutral pallete.

OK fair point. I would like to go more rustic (off of the fireplace, neutrals, tans, blues, etc.. The bed and the chairs are a Tweed fabric that collects dust and they are more than 15 years old so I’d like to start fresh with wood lighter and brighter. I love coastal/eclectic/transitionalThe art is family memories, but I am happy to take it down or lay it out differently. I just wouldn’t know where to begin. The only thing I would probably keep are the nightstands and work from there. I am looking for a more neutral type of llook I would say. All of the pieces in my room that I purchased years ago were from the mid century, modern era, and I’m not into that style at all anymore

AS for blinds - I just need room darkening. Can't do curtains bc of the fireplace unfortunately. I have priced out some roller shades and wovens from Hunter Douglas but I am overwhelmed with choices.

I want to pretend Im in California that's basically what I'm looking for.

The cluttered room off the back is actually a home office. It's completely separated by a walkin closet. Neither is usually cluttered just the time I took this photo.

ooookay -- since I grew up in California my suggestions are going to be heavily influenced by that. I don't think you should emphasize the fireplace because no one in CA puts a bed by a towering brick fireplace! So I think you should emphasize other things and play down the FP

For my Malibu bedroom I would choose (I'll try not to be too colorful)

    plain bed -- no nailheads

    lightweight natural fiber bedding

    blue and sand area rug

I would even do table lamps like the one in the photo but would get sand/stone bases

    or try this rug

plants -- lots of plants -- on the floor, on wicker pedestals, maybe even some hanging on macrame with beads!

Keep the ottomans but replace the chairs

sorry but here is color for the lounge chairs

    Rug for under chairs

    throws for the chairs

swag a pendant over the chairs

change out the shades to white and bring in as many seascapes and as much poppy art as you like to hang on the walls. If it were me, I'd pick these guys to remind of a California beach

thank you! this is muccch more my vibe!! Although I am trying to get rid of fiber on headboard bc of allergies so wood. bUt I get the idea. thank you

ps: I think you can swag a fabric on the window to the right of your bed away from the fireplace. Something flimsy and boho that is tied back always, with a shade underneath.

I would clear the fireplace hearth and maybe get a very large glass bowl

and fill it with beach stones and maybe a few seashells on it. Low key mexican pottery

    some tiles

You could even use one of those as curtain tie back

I love so many of the suggestions from mytwo cents. I’ve put together a mood board with some of her ideas and some inspiration photos. I really like the personal touch of family memories in a bedroom. You can do an entire wall for a cozy feel.

As charming as a high backed wicker chair may be, they are often uncomfortable. To stay with this fabulous theme, here are two other chair ideas.

A warm colored rug might work with this theme, too.

You've got a nice space. When you go with neutrals add in a lot of texture so it doesn't get boring. Here's a warm color scheme that adds in a bit of color that goes well with the fireplace stone. I'd suggest woven wood blinds. They can be made with room darkening liner plus you can do top down/bottom up for keeping privacy but still let in light.

this is so lovely! Love the window treatments and the green!! Thank you so much.

    You're welcome.

I love what Emily came up with. The orange and green really work in there.

Emily, where are those lamps from - love that! and the bedding!

The blue walls feel cold. To create a warm and cozy space I would start with changing the blue to a soft cream. I would relate the bed to the fireplace by choosing a wood bed frame in teak or warm caramel colored wood. Add a highly textured throw, and a simply patterned area rug.

    Throw blanket , pillows

Bed and wall color, texture in the area rug

I actually think you have a very nice room as is, but understand wanting something fresh and new. There are terrific ideas here…. I understand the need for blackout shades….. I also need them. I think I would start with the rug. Like in a living room you either start with the rug or if you have a large art piece, start with that and build your colors and layers from that. I love the items in Jennifer’s photo above. The bed is beautiful. You can then select your rug and add bedding, throws, pillows, lamps and other decorative items. I like some of the items mytwocents suggested. I am surprised that you are able to hang the TV over the fireplace unless it’s not one that does not need any venting. Usually there are codes that prevent that. Good luck and please post photos of the changes you make!

The bedding is from Amazon and the blinds are blinds.com, but everything else is from Wayfair.

Oh! Pining for California High Sierra

    For the hearth:

    Vintage Miner's Pan from Etsy

Regarding blackout window treatments, I have cellular blackout window shades from Hunter Douglas that block light completely and they come in all colors and neutrals, so you might check that out.

I agree that the blue walls feel disjointed with the fireplace stone but it is possible to get a more coastal look by bringing in cream/white, warm neutrals like taupe and light browns and a little bit of blue.

Drapes will make a huge difference, don't rule them out because of the fireplace. Stack them tightly on that window if you don't have enough room on the right side or sweep them over when the fireplace is operating if that's the concern.

Here are some photos that incorporate colors of the fireplace in a woven bench, lampshades, pillows, etc. and add a bit of black for contrast. You may be able to relocate your current rug to the seating area and make it work with much lighter seating and larger artwork. If the artwork above your bed is a stock canvas that you want to upcycle, consider painting more white on it to brighten it up and framing it.

    How bad are the allergies?

I know that when allergies get really really bad in my family we just want to get rid of everything and just have smooth non-dust catching surfaces. Are the allergies year round?

Ok - following up with ya'll on what I have purchased. Would still love insight on endtables. I am not sure the existing ones I have will work with the new style and I decided for now to keep the chairs I have and just brighten them up with white boucle lumbar pillow and these new pieces: (keeping the room blue, it's way cheaper)

    Bed

Rug for bed: it's a soft blue/cream/tan combo

Rug for seating : it's a soft chunky heathered oatmeal

Throw blanket for chairs in seating area: (wth the white boucle lumbar pillow) keeping the beachy ottomans in cream

New Flax Linen bedding in natural color with this pillow for accent :

and a clay pot for my aloe plant.

I'm going to swap the charcoal gray shades for their white other side. and the company can repaint the header and footers white to match saving a ton on new window treatments.

Would LOVE nightstand recommendations 22" or smaller. Lamps for reading that don't take up a ton of nightstand space and any other fun accessories for the room. I have not looked at art yet.

    How'd I do?

Nice choices so far. Here is an idea for a small nightstand and a wall lamp. Wall lamps are good at saving space. This one has texture but there are a lot of good choices available in both hardwired and corded options. If you go the corded route just remember to get a cord cover to hide the unsightly cord.
