Side Yard project ideas

Hi all,
I’m looking for ideas to help with the build out of this space. It used to be an area for a children’s playset. This is the side yard of the house. What’s the best and highest use of the space in your opinion?

Right now it appears to be a space that has no real connection to ant of the homes indoor spaces so I need to know how it realtes to the whole house .So a indoor floor plan shoung where this space is in realtion to thta is the first step. Do you have an outdoor entertaining space now? If so where is it. It seems to have been an odd place for a playeset so the windows shown are where in the house. Take pics of the whole yard and the house post them here in comments DO NOT start another post

The best and highest use of the space is what YOU determine it to be. There is no set answer and our opinions are immaterial to the issue. How do you use or want to use the rest of the garden? Are all outdoor activities and entertainment areas already addressed? If so, perhaps a simple planting bed......or just replace the lawn. Or a combination of both.

But it is something you need to decide.

For our first 20 years of living in our home we had a side yard that looked something like yours. It was just grass, a couple of trees and a planting bed close to the house. The backyard, however, was great, with trees and a large patio, a pergola, built in barbecue, and a pool and spa, but the side yard was blah. My large kitchen window and dining room windows looked out into the blah. It was great for throwing the ball for the dog, however.

So several years ago, we added two trees, a wide planting bed with a gentle curve, and a stone bench. Now, I keep my blinds up in the kitchen because I can see lizards, butterflies, hummingbirds and bees as they cavort through the flowers. The jacaranda (which has only bloomed once so far) is visible from my dining room. I love this space in our yard, and it still works great for our grandpuppy when she comes to stay.

It truly depends on what YOU want from your side yard...we already had all the other recreational things we wanted, so this is a more contemplative and relaxing part of the yard, and it gives me a great view from my kitchen, which looks out directly toward the bench.

To me it is a perfect place for a kitchen garden. Plant asparagus along the solid wall; then plant chives, sage, oregano, and other perennial herbs plus a pot of basil in a corner and a pot of mint in another corner. Also consider adding lavender to use in ice cream and cakes. All of these plants are low-maintenance and only the basil won't survive winter. The asparagus and basil will need water and the asparagus will need fertilizer, but otherwise these plants will just grow and add to your culinary experience.

It would only work as a kitchen garden if it receives sufficient sun. Being in the angle of the house, I wonder if it does? All the herbs mentioned, except the chives and mint, require full sun. Basil especially would sulk.

Knowing the geographical location would help immensely.

It looks pretty close to the neighbor's yard. Would you need privacy for whatever you decide to do with it?

years ago my husband planted a cutting flower garden for me on the side of the house - and i had fresh flowers 9 months of the year - if the area gets enough sun that’s what I would do - esp since the area looks a bit remote

Well I don’t know what you should do, but I would make a flower/planting bed there in all the space between the arrow and the house. I don’t know how to draw a slightly curved line, but that’s what I’d do. Makes the area easier to mow.

Looks like you could have a large shrub in the corner with room left over for flowers.

You also have a perfect spot for a water butt there.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a water butt? 😳😬🤔

Could you make a little stick figure drawing of your house and land around it and post it in the comment section? I'd like to see how this area relates to others. Where will you see it from and how much light does it get? Also what part of the country / zone is this?

I love the idea of a cut flower garden too. You can grow a serious amount of flowers in this space. Maybe a water butt too...? (I have no idea what a water butt is.)

LOL!! Did you try looking it up?? Water butt = rain barrel.
