what’s the best solution here?

Old house from the 60’s. Redoing a downstairs bedroom and discovered mold on the drywall in the closet. Went to investigate and repair and it looks like somewhere along the line, an exterior door was closed off. I assume the mold/moisture issue is caused by the drywall being attached directly to the block wall with no moisture barrier or air gap. Believe the correct way it should’ve been done was attaching furring strips to the block wall and then drywall to that. But now if I do that, the new drywall won’t line up with rest of the drywall because of the 1x4’s. Any advice
