Perhaps something like Lemon Lime. It gets nice fairly dark purple flowers. What is the colour of your JM?

That one is a very limey green, in that area I also have a red, a couple yellows and an orangish one.

will it bother you.. if you kill the JM by digging up its surface roots to jam hosta under it???

in my experience.. the fine mat of JM roots does not enjoy being chewed up by shovel.. and it will regrow the root mass.. and just about kill anything you plant under it... by stealing all the water provided....

I will try to get some pics tomorrow. And it is a BEAUTIFUL tree….but hosta make my heart sing and trees just make me smile so in my mind they have to find a way to get along

Oh, it is a gorgeous maple. Everything looks so lush!

I am of no help on trying to grow something in difficult places. I would try something like epimedium that forms it's own web of surface roots and thrives in dry shade. I have new for me "Sandy claws" am trying to grow.
