Majesty palms are lovely as are Colocasia plants which come in greens as well as dark colors. They can get to 6' or more. Not sure what thrives in Florida though. Check out local nurseries. The bigger the better!

ETA: if the mulch gets ruined by the rain, I definitely would not add a rug. Mildew and mold will take hold. Not good.
