Decorating large console and wall

Hi everyone. I was wondering how you all think I should decorate this large console. It’s 128” long. I was thinking maybe a large mirror standing in the middle and maybe floating shelves? Any ideas and pictures would be so helpful. Thank you!!

Your upholstery is busy so I would get 1 long piece of art. About 3/4 the width of the console. Not lots of little items What would a mirror reflect?

If you have a couple more framed photos you love, consider putting all of them in a collage on the wall above console. Then add a pretty decorative lamp and a bowl on the console. Doesn’t need to be busy, but save space for seasonal things you’d like to display. Looks cozy already!

jck910 a mirror would reflect the TV

jackowskib that’s what I was thinking of with floating shelves. Then put the pix on them. OR some kind of artwork…but then where would I put my family photos??

It would help to see other walls of the room. It looks like a deep wall color on the fireplace wall. I think I would put that color on the console wall. Then, you can either use a large piece of art over console with just a few additional accessories; or determine what other wall treatment is best given your chairs are pretty traditional but the console is pretty modern? It is gorgeous but it will demand great look over it. I would put personal pictures in a room or hall that is more private.

Flo Mangan here’s more pix. Please excuse the mess. I wanted a huge pix over the fireplace from my Italy vacation but no place would enlarge it that big. Honestly, the decor part of this room is killing me. The only thing…I really don’t want to paint.

I’d avoid lots of small items and instead ground/add weight to the wall and console. Finding the right pieces and their placement needs patience, but will be worth it (be sure to include a lamp). Add art instead of mirror and perhaps edit family photos and use similar frames.

I like jck910’s idea of one large piece of art, yet I also love the idea of a gallery wall of family photos. I know that’s a contradiction! Here’s two mock-ups of both ideas. The third photo shows a console completely surrounded by art. If these were family photos, Iinstead of a TV and art, I’m certain it would be a popular attraction.

Something like this. Couldn’t get exact match on wall color but gives you idea. One large piece over console picking up gold from beautiful console hardware. A pair of gold metal buffet lamps and a couple faux or real Olive trees in hammered metal plant containers. You pick art but it has to be large and pick up gold. Super pretty and striking secondary focal point since your fireplace wall is probably demanding it be the focal point. Need more pictures of your other walls. If the wall opposite the console has TV, then I wouldn’t put a mirror over console. If mirror doesn’t reflect something in the space that’s worth seeing twice no mirror. 😊

Sorry but you have to paint that wall. 😅It mirrors the fireplace wall. Perfect. It’s not that much to paint. There are many pictures, art that would fit above your fireplace along with a few select accessories. Accessories make rooms. You could stack two paintings over fireplace for more height. Lots of great options. It’s an interesting space with sone architectural interest. A bit dated but good accessories can really turn this space into a wonderful, inviting room.

Flo Mangan the wall is next to the fireplace wall. But you’re funny saying I have to paint it. And the gold console hardware? It’s actually not gold at all. It’s light wood. Here’s a pic of the Italy photo I wanted. If you have any suggestions I’d love it. I’m unable to make it really big.

Another question…the two cases on the right are new. I thought they’d be good in the space. No? Should I return if possible?

    Or this…

Maureen, on a piece this big, one or two lamps? And the vases on the right…could they be instead of a lamp? And how tall should the lamp be?

Best thing is to try lots of different combinations (buy and return) until you are happy...proportions, heights make a difference.

Glad you took my comment on painting with good heart as intended. If you don’t carry fireplace wall color to wall behind the console, then big art is even more important. Don’t worry, many people underestimate the need for great (not necessarily expensive) accessories and art pieces. I am sure if you want Italian Lake Como paintings we can find many for you. And other looks. I often “stretch” budgets with one great piece and fill in with lower cost pieces. No one but you knows the truth and you can get great look. A budget friendly place I use often is World Market. If you are near one, might want to check them out.

World Market?? Sounds great but I’ve never heard of it so I’m sure I don’t live near one!

Flo Mangan how big should the piece be?

Here are some possibilities from GreatBigCanvas. 50% off sale now. Not sure which region you are after. I selected these for over fireplace. But not sure how wide your mantel is. Need art to be about 2/3 to 3/4 width of mantel. Some like no wider than firebox. But I break rules if you find something you love. Lol

Not sure what “two cases” you mean?

My mantle is 76”. That’d be a huge painting, right? My firebox is between 32” and 40ish”. Originally I was thinking it should be 40x60.
    Oh sorry, I meant vases.

If you go to their website, I think you can enter your zip code and find store near you. Of course, you can order on line but it’s their variety and good finds at great prices that I love.

Be sure you can return any purchase, as until you have experimented with the accessories you won’t know how it will all come together. Thought this might help, but rules can be broken; balance is what is the most important/the connection. Highly suggest first deciding on the overall feel/style and only then begin your search.

Would suggest a large and relatively long piece of artwork above the console with perhaps a few items atop it. Perhaps lamps as the photos above show with lower height items in between. Good luck!

Your pictures of Positano are great! Did you take them yourself? I would take your photographs and hang them with the Positano photos -- both of them -- above your console. Hang the photo with the piece of balcony near your white vases. You might want to get the photos framed in different sizes depending on where they come from.

I think it would be nice to have on the console pottery or candlesticks or both that is very typical of the Amalfi. I particularly love Vietri, but also I love colorful fruit pieces as well

In fact, I would be very tempted to get a big round tray in an Amalfi design to use on the ottoman as well. It will make your chair fabric look like the towns stacked up on the cliffs. ;)

I’m loving all these ideas. Thank you! A few questions…my room has 6 spot lights on that side (and 6 on the TV side). So it’s well lit. Do I still need lamps or is that only for layering purposes? Also, mytwocents, should the Amalfi coast pix be canvas or photo? My daughter took the photos!

    last modified: 3 years ago

Why not your daughter's photos? They are lovely. I knew instantly where she was standing.

Are you asking if your daugheter's photos should be fabricated as canvases or be hung as photos? I don't really know.

Alas, that above is a very expensive table top but here are some other affordable items that could either go on your console or near your seating You can hang these on the wall or put them on plate stands on the console

    https://www.chairish.com/product/7932240/20th-century-vietri-ceramic-fruit-platters-a-pair

These are rather small (8x8) but still could be nice either just one on the wall or several, or on plate stands on the console.

Here's a blue tray that might look nice on your ottoman

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/1341657299/amalfi-tray-i-blue-and-white-tray-i-deco?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-home_and_living-kitchen_and_dining-dining_and_serving-trays_and_platters-trays&utm_custom1=k_Cj0KCQjwj5mpBhDJARIsAOVjBdqp7QbkXhFRg91pkFSRGCT38mfM4PjJF2Kyiz6C1ee0rrNFFpxwllQaArbuEALw_wcB_k&utm_content=go_1843970809_72389333969_346398200041_aud-1118323511478:pla-308550193395_c__1341657299_12768591&utm_custom2=1843970809&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj5mpBhDJARIsAOVjBdqp7QbkXhFRg91pkFSRGCT38mfM4PjJF2Kyiz6C1ee0rrNFFpxwllQaArbuEALw_wcB

Of course you don't want all these things but once you have hung the photos then you can look on line for Amalfi things like candlesticks, vases, platters, centerpieces and maybe something will pop out at you. You can also search for Vietri sul Mare ceramics more specifically.

Mytwocents I don’t want so much Italy stuff, I just love that shot from Positano. I meant should I make her photo into a canvas or not? I’m still unsure of the sizes…

Of course not so much Italy stuff! If it appeals to you to an amalfi ceramic here or there, that was my idea. Showing you infinite options, but you should do what pleases you..

I don't think I've ever seen a photo transferred to canvas. If you are going to use your other photos and hang them on the wall in the same space I would think using a photo makes sense.

Painter's tape is a great way to figure out an arrangement of framed pieces on a wall. I don't know if you want to use one or both of your daughter's photos, but whatever, you can play around with the photos you have, making rectangles on the wall with tape of where you think they would each look best, and then figure out the size you want for framing your daughter's work, where you are going to place it in the mix.

I think a painting has more presence than a photo. For the size you need, I think a painting for over the fireplace is the way to go. Perhaps a more abstract version would work with your furnishings. I still would keep art over fireplace focal point. Side wall over console is “supporting” element. Did you get to World Market? If so, any luck?

Such an interesting home! Because of everything going on, you will need to group items that are the same. i.e. Photo Department, Art Department, Seasonal Department...haha

First, take all the family pictures and buy frames that are similar: like the ones on the buffet with the large white mattes. They don't have to be professional frames, as most department stores have black inexpensive frames.

Over the buffet: The Photo Department: That furniture piece is gorgeous! Install two art shelves, in dark wood, to extend past the buffet width (almost wall to wall. This will be your photo gallery. Refrain from putting photos on the buffet...just on the floating shelves. On top of the buffet, simple accessories like a collection of boxes or glass paperweights or books laid flat.

If you need more room for pics, find another location in your home to have a gallery. I have seen this done down a hallway in a single line with the bottom of all the frames lined up. It was lovely. The art was hung about 54" - 60" from the floor (eye level).

For the fireplace: The Art/Seasonal Department: Purchase the print/photo/art of Italy (your daughter shot!) and print it big -with a simple dark frame - 30 x 40 to center over the fireplace. Add the white vases that are now on the buffet and the candles. Also use the fireplace area for seasonal...you now have pumpkins and any other seasonal accessories. Don't add any family photos on the fireplace wall.

Double shelf for over buffet. Coordinate all frames and mattes.

    Using similar frames and mattes,

    Photos all framed the same.

Photo display for an additional area in your home

Over fireplace - Large 30 x 40 plus dark frame with white vases, candlesticks, and seasonal accessories.

Agree with celery on the lighting - lamps are SO much nicer at night, see if you can have lamps on two sides of the room - i often try to have 3 lamps to create a nice triangle of light

I only turn on my overheads to clean :)

Denise Marchand I love your ideas! Thank you! Do you think 30x40
Is big enough over the fireplace? That’s what is there now and I was thinking 40x60 (hard to get).
