Mixing Knobs and Pulls Advice

Going flat black on the hardware.

Currently we are doing pulls for the wall cabinet and pulls for the floor draws/cabinets.

But, was thinking if we should do knobs for the floor cabinets (lazy Susan corner, under the sink and right corner)

Would that look okay or should we just do all pulls.

Does your preference apply toward wall cabinets, because we are set on doing pulls on the wall cabinets. But, our concern is if we did all pulls on the floor cabinets if it would look to bulky? But, then if we did the knobs on those floor cabinets that I mentioned would it look silly… never thought I’d be getting a headache over hardware lol

I say silly because it’s like 4 cabinets that would have knobs

I don't think there are really any hard and fast rules for knobs and pulls. You should do whatever is your preference as long as it works well for you.

I dont think we have a preference we just want it to look nice LOL!

We were originally going to do all pulls but then decided for the bathroom vanity cabinet doors we were going to do knobs. So, we started to rethink the kitchen on whether we should be consistent there as well with what we are doing in the bathroom.

IMO a lot of this depends on the style of kitchen too. I like all pulls but I do not like all one size . I like pulls to be in proportion to the cabinet or drawer size , never 2 short pulls on drawers and when figuring out the scale I use blue painters tape . Sometimes it is nice to have not all on direction either . This is a great pic for seeing the use of pulls in proportion and in 2 different directions.

I think it will look better with knobs on the lower cabinets. Mixing things up a bit gives more dimension and life to the space.

    Thanks so much everyone!

I love my sister's bravery - she has different knobs and pulls on each cabinet.

Funny thing - most people don't notice it. I love asking people a day or two after a party at my sister's home what they thought of her pulls and getting this blank look. Even after cooking in her kitchen my nieces (not her daughters) hadn't noticed the different knobs and pulls.

This is the pull on her dining room light.

I’m in the all pulls group. I prefer the continuity, knobs on lowers can get caught on pockets (had this problem in my previous home), and pulls are more ergonomic.

I definitely dislike the ”all one size” overly large pulls Patricia has.

Use blue painters tape for mock-ups of what you're considering before you drill holes. Black pulls and knobs will really stand out against white cabinets. Since you have a black window maybe this is where the black is coming from. Are you also going to have a black faucet?

Knobs on cabinets, pulls on drawers.

Yes I will have black faucet and black accent island pendant lighting

Given you're at 60 posts now, you never post follow-ups on how anything has turned out. Puzzling especially given how much time folks have put in over 60 posts to help you. For example how did the crown molding problem work out How Will They Tie in Cabinet Crown with Ceiling Crown (houzz.com) or anything on the elevations. Anything? Anything at all?

You seem to care a lot about how many posts I make? Isn’t this what part of using this app is for to ask for help and advice? I’ve thanked people for their comments and responses to my questions. Not sure what your issue is. I’ve never once was disrespectful to anyone. You just seem to come on my posts and keep a tab of how many I’ve made. I’m not sitting on this app all day. I appreciate everyone’s responses.

And with all due respect, everyone here has gone on this app willingly, no one was forced on to this app. So yes people have spent time to help one another but you’re making it sound like I’ve called people to tell them to stop their life to answer my question.

    last modified: 2 years ago

While I would never call anyone out, we all do like and appreciate follow up.

This not only satisfies those you gave advice, but seeing a finished product is helpful to anyone searching for answers to a similar dilemna..

I agree with @Hemlock. It’s just good forum etiquette. You show a degree of entitlement that other posters here do not. Your replies just emphasized that.

M Miller - Entitled to what? The fact that I’m allowed to post a question just like anyone else that needs assistance?I’m not trying to be disrespectful, I just dislike being called out and talked to like I rightfully disrespected someone on here, which I never have. People have the right to respond or keep scrolling. If you want to help on advice, then yes I am very appreciative of it, if not, then that is the individuals choice and I respect that.

Eld 6161 - If hemlock communicated to me the way you just did, I would of had no issue with it. So, I respect it and I understand what you are saying.

I don’t have an issue with what you guys are saying regarding following up with the posts. I get it. I just don’t like being talked to like how Hemlock came across. There are better ways to communicate then to come off nasty about something that could have been communicated in a better manner, like Eld6161 has done.

I love seeing the posts where someone shows how their reno turned out or shares how things were solved, but honestly, my experience is that most posters continue to engage until their quest is satisfied and more often than not, they don't share the end result. They got their answer and moved on to their next problem.

Even the posters where we have specifically asked "please share pictures when your done" and they respond "I will" don't.

I have been stuck in a personal dilemma recently where I have become acutely aware of people not responding.

My sister is in Hospice. We have a group family text where people share when they will be visiting or what happened when they visited. I still work full time and cannot go every day, but I try to make sure that I go after work if no one else was able to go during the day, and I go every weekend, usually both Saturday and Sunday, since the family members who went all week need a break.

The only two who never say when they are going to show up are my sister's two sons. I get there and one of them walks through the door. They only come sporadically - about once ever 2 weeks or so. I could have planned to come the next day or might have chosen to get something done that I have neglected, but they didn't bother to respond to the group and let us know when they will be showing up. What's even worse is when they say they are coming and don't show. I am waiting for one of them to come so I can leave and go back to work or run my errands and no one shows up. I have learned not to mention to my sister if one of her sons says they will be there. If you do and they don't show up she cries and gets upset, says she can't find her children or doesn't know where her boys are. It is heartbreaking.

I tried talking to them and both gave me the same answer - everyone should be free to visit when they want and no one should dictate to them when they should come. Basically told me they don't schedule their lives around others and it is my choice and my problem if I am scheduling my life around others.

I would think this is generational, but I have younger nieces and nephews that visit my sister and reply to the group text and keep everyone in the loop. It is just the two who seem to feel like they are under no obligation.

This situation really bothers me. I would enjoy seeing an OP respond, but it isn't personal and I am certainly not keeping track or loosing sleep when they don't.

@Jennifer Hogan - I'm so so sorry about your sister, and your wish for better communiation is understandable.

This thread was a great reminder for me to post my own update to my question, so thanks for the nudge all! I would have done so eventually, for sure, but did so sooner than later.

@Jennifer Hogan I am so sorry about your sister. When my mother was in hospice, my sister did not visit her. She said she could not handle it. Part of me understands, but part of me thinks she should have worked up her courage. It doesn’t change anything though. And me getting upset will not affect her behavior one bit. People are who they are, and they rarely look in the mirror.

I do understand that some people are fragile and really cannot handle stress. I can understand if it is too much for them to see their mother in this condition. I wish they would have visited more when she was doing better. Now it is just hard.

What I can not understand is why they can't text "I'm going to visit mom on Saturday morning." so that the rest of us can run to the farmers market or do some laundry or pay bills on Saturday morning and don't make the drive only to find that she already has company.

Sorry - I think I may just be venting.

I’m so sorry your family is going through this, Jennifer. I’ve been there and the non responsiveness was a real problem. Sending you all some comfort. ❤️

Personal preference. Also depends on a few things: how tall are upper cabinets? Are drawer fronts slab or recessed? What is the style of the kitchen/house?

For inset (flush and beaded) I like knobs on uppers and handles on lowers. Handles look too heavy on the wall cabinets with flush frame overlay.

For more modern and/or full overlay cabinetry? I like all handles.

For slab style drawers anything goes, but be careful with recessed panel drawers....some handles might not fit.

They are shaker style 42 inch wall cabinets. I would like to say the house is more on the modern side or at least we’re trying to make it that way lol. Yea we really like the handles but, from what I’m understanding I guess there isn’t any one rule but more so a personal preference?

This is really just a matter of personal preference.

Yes, pulls, cups or knobs are a matter of personal taste. They are the kitchen's "jewelry" and an opportunity to add a bit of personality. The idea (don't remember who presented it above) of using painters' tape to verify the length of the pulls you're considering.

    - I personally like the LOOK of pulls on the lower cabinets /drawers and knobs on the uppers -- but pulls are more functional.

    - Pulls are easier to grab -- especially for older people who may have arthritic hands or reduced strength.

    - You can poke a towel through a pull. Can't do that with a knob.

    - Pulls that "stick out" can grab your clothing as you walk by, which is an annoyance.

    - Oblong or stick-type knobs can "spin" on their single screw, and that's not attractive. Ask me how I know -- and mine even have those little pokey-pokes in the back that're supposed to stop this. In the future I will never buy a knob that isn't round.

@Jennifer Hogan Condolences on this painful loss. I volunteered for years for Hospice, and one of the things I learned is that often the people closest to the person who is passing have the hardest time being there or behaving as one would hope/expect. It's exceptionally rare that people behave in a mature, considerate manner all at the same time. And then, when the end has come and one would think a family would pull together, the truth is people tend to compete in their grief, and struggle to help each other process their pain. The competition can be over who hurts most, who helped most, whom she loved most. It can be subtle or very obvious. We might find that weird on the outside, but it's common and thus, normal.

Her sons may seem selfish to you, perhaps, but they are closest-they are losing their Mom and this disrupts their processing skills, their communication skills, the whole shebang. I know you know them better than I do, and you know whether they have consistently been unreliable, but they will not show their pain in Hallmark movie ways.

Our comments on this thread will probably be flagged for being off topic, but I wanted to reach out and share that your experience is noted and hard, but typical. I wish you ease and peace.

They better not remove your post, Keen B. That is one of the most insightful posts I've ever read. Everyone deals with death/dying/funerals in their own way. I have a relative that nervous laughs at funerals...she says she can't help it. I'm very close to her and I find it very odd and don't understand it. This person is a professional that speaks in front of thousands and runs her own multimillion dollar business. Maybe we can start a new thread for this...as I'm sure lots will reply.

@ Keen B - Thank you. I think some days are worse than others and I, like the rest of my family am emotionally whipped. I find myself getting angry, not being tolerant, just worn out. Venting here was helpful and your words reminded me that this is a shared grief and I need to work on being more compassionate and kinder.

Well OP, I am going with pulls on drawers and knobs that look like pulls (rectangular not round) on doors - fwiw. But as others have written, it’s a personal choice. Cabinet hardware is like jewelry, so many choices and styles to support a “ look”. Good luck finding yours.

A problem with knobs on lower cabinets is that they can snare things / people brushing against them. My preference is knobs or pulls on uppers and pulls on lowers

Are you able to tape pulls and knobs to a few of the cabinets to see how you like them, or have someone hold them up? Ultimately, the answer isn’t what other people would like, but how to determine what you would like best before ordering and drilling.

First, you need to replace the flooring with real wood or real vinyl, not vinyl that looks like wood (unless this is a mobile home). And the cabinets are particle board so be sure to seal them to not let as many toxins from the glue escape. And hope you do not have a roof leak as they dissolve when wet. And save up to replace them in a few years as they fall apart easily. Solid wood cabinets are worth the price and never need to be replaced. I have NO particle board in my house as I do not want formaldehyde-like toxins in my home. And get more cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling. It looks hokey to have cabinets not all the way up and the top will collect dust and even cooking oil - there is no reason to have that gap up there - it was something they did a few decades ago to save money - it was never done with good (now antique) cabinets in older homes 100 yrs ago. And be sure to NOT use BLACK anywhere in there!!! Get nice white appliances and the island should be a nice pastel color if not real wood, and NOT BLACK. Never use black in a house unless you want it to look ugly and cold and uninviting. Ugh.

I made a similar choice as you for my new kitchen and purchased the best flat black pulls & knobs I could find - none were anodized, all painted and within 18 months I had to start replacing them because the paint was wearing off. Especially if high traffic areas and if you wear any rings at all - I only wear my wedding ring but still wore the paint off all the pull along the edges and the same for many knobs. I have switched them all out to stainless steel now and no problem - would have liked anodized stainless bit had to make do with plain.

    Examples of flat black wear:

I did not select them, but my kitchen has knobs on all the upper cabinets. Most of the bottom cabinets are drawers and they have pulls. The lazy susan corner cabinet and the few other lower cabinets have knobs. Interestingly until i saw your question, I never notice the mixed bottom hardware!

I've recently come back on Houzz after a several year hiatus and am aghast at the rude comments and far afield topics on this thread. Aren't there MODERATORS on the site? I have been using Next Door hoping to find neighbor recommended contractors & handymen, but the level of rudeness & hostility on that site is also appalling. Though it was initially spurred on by state mandated zoning changes, the negativity has oozed into local elections, etc.

Has the concept of basic civility really become a thing of the past? It existed for a very good reason. Even wolves show more respect for their societal rules for the good of the pack.

@terrib962 - Could you have possibly been any more negative or self absorbed?

First, you need to replace the flooring with real wood or real vinyl, not vinyl that looks like wood (unless this is a mobile home). Says who? Why? I gave a lot of thought to selecting my flooring and the clear winner was Luxury Vinyl. I did not want the maintenance of real wood (own two dogs). I lived 30 years with tile and needed something easier on my joints. I looked at a dozen different options and kept coming back to Luxury Vinyl.

Solid wood cabinets are worth the price - Says who? Again, I have given a lot of thought and consideration to my cabinet selection for my kitchen. I have chosen Ikea cabinets. They have a good reputation, last a long time and are within my budget. Real wood cabinets would be nice, but they will cost way more than Ikea MDF, and I think I know my financial priorities a bit better than you know them. Who are you to tell anyone how they should prioritize their spending?

And get more cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling. It looks hokey to have cabinets not all the way up and the top will collect dust and even cooking oil - there is no reason to have that gap up there - it was something they did a few decades ago to save money - it was never done with good (now antique) cabinets in older homes 100 yrs ago.

Really? 100 years ago is when the common kitchen first started having built in cabinets. Prior to that they were free standing pieces of furniture (Hoosier), before Hoosiers most had open shelving. Most modern kitchens are largely copies of the kitchen design developed by Lillian Gilbreth (inventor of the kitchen work triangle). She was an engineer and efficiency expert and believed that the kitchen was no different than the work spaces that she and her husband developed for office work and and manufacturing. All tools had to be within reach, without stooping, bending or stretching.

Those cabinet heights were not designed based on economics, but ergonomics.

Get your facts straight before lecturing others.

And be sure to NOT use BLACK anywhere in there!!! Get nice white appliances and the island should be a nice pastel color if not real wood, and NOT BLACK. Never use black in a house unless you want it to look ugly and cold and uninviting. Once again. . . Says who? Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Architectural Digest and many other publications have articles showcasing the beauty of using black in your kitchen.

Jennifer Hogan, I was THRILLED to see the name of Lillian Gilbreth in your post! I loved those “Cheaper By the Dozen” books about the Gilbreth family when I was a kid, and as an adult have read a bit about her work. I didn’t know she had invented the kitchen work triangle!

I am afraid that Houzz is turning into nasty Instagram posts. A dear lady asked for assistance and doesn’t deserve nasty opinions.
Answer the question or move along.
Btw I have knobs on lower cabinets and wished I went with pulls. My earphone wires and pockets are always pulled.
Good luck to you. I love your kitchen so far.

A few pics of my mixture of knobs (on cabinets) and pulls (on drawers). The knobs are mother-of-pearl, and added some sentimentality. The pulls are varying sizes depending on drawer widths (and we’ve never caught any clothing on any of them).

Oh, and btw…the floors are not LVP, they are solid cork planks and are MAGNIFICENT!

I had planned to do knobs on top and pulls on drawers and lowers but when i help up the pulls and knobs I had ordered (Top Knobs Ash Grey Princetonian) doing just one size of pulls seemed to look right so I agree it is a personal preference.
