but all we really know of so sweet is that it was a streaker crossed with a fragrant.

the plantaginea genes are its driving force.

So that's all that is known about So Sweet? It seems to me that Kevin Vaughn left hosta behind when he went away to college. Did he not keep records? How many streakers were there back then?

I can see how he could be bitter about what happened to his hosta, though. From what I've read, he doesn't talk about them.

I know that I have a So Sweet crossed with my nose as the bend to smell ratio was correct.

I also have two….they do very well here in MKE. To me they are only slightly fragrant. As ilovetogrow says, I have to get very close to smell fragrance.

The story about Paul Aden pirating many hostas from Kevin Vaughn and others is a really eye opening one. I think all hosta growers should read the story on the front page of the HL, 3rd column, at the bottom. I was quite disgusted after reading it.

Did Kevin Vaughn never recover? Anyone know??

I emailed kevin a few years ago trying get him to speculate the origins of some of his fragrant plants. he said that when they were taken at such a young age he had know idea which ones they ended up being. aden registered them with fake origins.

he moved to oregon after retiring and only works with things like chicks and hens.

he stopped working with hosta

That’s really, really sad, hosta_maker….. Aden’s cruel thievery completely changed his life. Think of all the lovely hostas he could have gone on to create.

On a happier note, the tetraploid fragrants seem to allow more fertility.

fertility is the reason we do not have an abundance of fragrant hosta.

and thus the traits that let them thrive in tropical conditions.

this year i have more pods on fragrants than i ever had before

mainly due to using more tetraploid pollen.
