Paint Kitchen Cabinets-Spruce up Kitchen

last year

I recently purchased a townhome in NH and am looking to spruce up the kitchen.

The townhome was built in the late 80's and has pine cabinets, older appliances and a laminate countertop. I would like to paint the cabinets a lighter color but not white. I will add new stainless steel appliances, new sink, faucet and either a quartz or granite countertop.

I am looking for suggestions on a paint color and countertop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Are you keeping the floor ? What are the floors in the rest of the townhouse ? Take all the stuff off the top of the cabinets , get the new appliances and then decide what you can do in the budget. IMO DIY painted cabinets usually do not come out well. In a townhome you also might not even have a spot to spray the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. I think you need to drop the raised br for sure , get a counter depth fridge . But before that we need info as to the flooring question and also if you love the layout. IMO to spand a $$$$$ on a not great kitchen is a huge waste of time and money.

What color are the walls and ceiling? On my laptop they look kind of grayish (which might not be accurate, but) not a good color for the floors or cabinets as they are, which makes the cabinets look worse. Just sayin'.

Good advice from Patricia to think about if you want/need to make any changes to the arrangement of the appliances & cabinets. Many advise living in your new space for 6 -12 months to get a good idea of what, if anything, you need to change. It is not a large space and depending on the piping, and what is under the space (basement or slab?) you might not be able to really change much except the fridge location. If you think that you might want to completely replace the cabinets with some that are more space efficient (eg, frameless) you would likely want to save your money toward that goal instead of replacing anything now.

If you decide to move forward with your original plan:

After deciding on a budget, counter choice should be first. You will just have to shop various outlets - showrooms, stoneyards, big box stores - to see what is out there for counters and what catches your eye (and what is within your budget.) Counter materials come at a range of price points. You will want to narrow the choices down to warm or neutral, not cool, tones to work with/compliment the floor. Also, since it is a rather busy floor, I would look for a quieter (not highly patterned, speckled, busy) counter material.

After you've settled on a counter is the time to start thinking about a color for the cabinets. There are many pale pastels that look great on cabinets - various greens (I am partial to sages), blues (I am also partial to green-blues), pale yellows - anything you like, really. The key is, it has to work well with the floor and counter! It looks like the floor has hints of various soft colors in it - that would be a good starting point for inspiration.

Also for inspiration search "pastel kitchen cabinets" for photos, and look through old issues of magazines like Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes & Gardens, and others - which often feature kitchens with unique choices in cabinet colors.

And please be sure to come back to show us your choices!

Those cabinets are oak, not pine.

Congratulations on your new home! The cabinets look to be in decent shape and I wouldn't go to the expense to paint them. The floor looks okay unless you want to replace it. Do you have a long range plan to eventually redo the kitchen?

If not then Change the hardware on the cabinets, look at seeing what the cost would be to make the peninsula all one level and replace the granite. Start looking at appliance sales and get a counter depth fridge and induction range.

The new countertop needs to coordinate with the flooring. Are you keeping the flooring?

The floor plan looks good. Your new fridge can open the other way for convenience. The oak cabinets look like they are in good shape. Paint will allow the raised grain to show through: they will never look smooth like paint-grade cabinets would look.

To pick out a countertop, take a drawer or door with you to the stone yard or showroom. Look for granite that shows warm caramel and vanilla ice cream colors.
