I've obtained quotes for replacing a bathroom floor.

The current floor is 2 inch, hexagonal tumbled marble tiles. The area is about 37 sq ft (58" x93") which includes the toilet and vanity.

I'm looking to replace the small tiles with something larger (probably 12 inch by 12 inch or slightly smaller) with less grout to maintain.

I received three quotes (removal plus installation).

For labor, they were:(approx.):

$1200 ($32/sq. ft.) ,

$3000 ($81/sq. ft.) and

$4000 ($108/sq. ft.) .

The $4k quote included removing/reinstalling the vanity and toilet.

The person giving me the $1200 figure was also the least formal who had a two-person operation (including a helper).

The other two vendors were part of larger operations.

I'm still waiting on a formal writeup for the $3k quote.

On a per-square foot basis these quotes (labor only) come out to:

$32/sq. ft.,

$81/sq. ft. and

\108/sq. ft.

I'm located in SE Michigan. I obtained a list of installers from the local tile shop. There are 9 there vendors on the list. I contacted ones who were closest to me.

I know I need to follow up to get more details on the lower 2 bids (e.g. do they plan on removing the vanity and toilet before installation?).

I've done some searching and removal of tile floors (according to search results) can range from $2 - $7 /sq ft.

The cost mentioned to install a marble floor varied but HD mentioned approx. $6.50 sq ft to install.

Having said that, I'm scratching my head about this range and amount of the quotes, especially the high end one. I understand the form factor of the room gives rather cramped working conditions. But the costs seem rather high.

Do these quoted costs sound reasonable?
