Here, after almost two months since the last rain, we finally got a centimeter or two. Go an inch down and the soil is still bone dry, but at least it watered the garden: the limp, drooping foliage has perked up. More rain is forecast for a couple of days from now. I sure hope it delivers. Glorious weather the last couple of days, and yesterday I spent a few happy hours down in the garden, first time in a while.

From evidence of a neighbor who was up at 4AM, it rained non-stop today for 9+ hours - is either stopped right now, or just pausing...

What a wonderful feeling. Rain at last, and steady but gentle rain that soaks in gradually is every rose gardner's dream. Enjoy it, and may this gift keep on giving for weeks to come, with pauses of sunshine, of course!

We got only a drizzle, about one millimeter. Still it is the first measureable rain of the season so I am happy.

We got that rain I mentioned as forecast in my last comment: around two inches, a little more than just watering the garden, and very satisfying. But that's not all! Yesterday it began to rain, going off and on through the day, a pretty good amount; and then today it's been raining all day, and quite hard. This looks to me like an amount of rain that can penetrate the soil, which is softened by previous precipitation, and perhaps start to replenish the aquifers, and begin to refill the reservoir, which has been running on empty for a while. It is WONDERFUL.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw rain like this; it may actually be years ago, as for a long time now, when we have gotten rain it has never seemed adequate, never enough. This is forecast to tail off tonight, and I do believe that by the time it ends it will feel like enough, for the moment. Another day of rain is forecast in a few days, which I actually feel hopeful will happen, and which will be welcome: we've been way too dry for way too long. But the water is coming in good amounts and at good intervals, and not in a single vicious downpour. We're lucky.

I don't know whether this weather has made it yet down to where Bart lives in central Italy. I do hope so: she, her area, her garden need it as badly as we do up here.

I can't say how much I've enjoyed the sound of rain, of wind, of occasional thunder near and distant; and the clouds and fogs. Marvelous. I hope you all are enjoying your weather as much as we are here.

I am LOVING our weather!!!!!! I don't even dare go into detail; all I will say is that THIS is what an Italian autumn should be like, and , no, we have not had an honest one like this in years. Looking at the forecast, it's hard for me to guess when there might be a day in which I can go out to my land and work- there are so few few relatively drier days forseen. I've still got about 9 plants left to move /plant out from their pots, and to complicate matters, the combination of rain and violent wind uprooted a huge oak that is currently blocking the flat path going up to my garden gate,so I have to clamber up a hill and slide down again to reach said gate. I'll miss that tree in the summer, for sure...BUT it may allow more precious morning light into the garden, and will provide oodles of great organic matter, too. "My cup runneth amuck", LOL. I am very, very happy and grateful! I figure that if I saw off one branch each time I go out there, in seven sessions I may be able to clear a path through the fallen tree. Then, when our finances are healthier, eventually we'll hire someone to come out with a motor saw and remove the biggest stuff that can't be done by hand. Hopefully I can get most of the leafy twigs cut off before they dry out and use them as mulch- I figure that as long as they are still green they might add more nitrogen to the soil (???)

YAY! Isn't the sound, and smell, of rain wonderful. So happy for you both. We have had some weather "fronts" come through in the last few days, but no rain so far. However, it is definitley FALL, finally - chilly nights, even. We are hoping that more rain will show up soon.

We got moisture but it was the frozen kind. :-) Brrrrr.

We cut roses before it came so have had some very nice displays maturing in the house. Surprisingly even the tightest buds have been opening.

We were predicted to have 1-3 inches Thurs-Sat, but they said it was an unpredictable storm. We ended up with 0.27 inches, pretty much evenly divided between Thurs and Sat. But I'll take anything that gives me a break from watering. Kudos, Jackie on your 3 inches in the past week!

Yes, Susan, that was a very annoying storm. They touted it as one which would bring us 2 inches the first day, and then lots more, and the first day we got .06 inches. I was so grateful several days later when it finally poured down for 24 hours without stopping. Our next rain is supposed to be Nov 30th, but I just hope the "normal" pattern we want in the winter of heavy storms every 4-5 days will re-establish itself - fingers crossed.

Deborah, I have this link from the County bookmarked, and it's so great! The data from Goleta, which is taken at the Los Carneros fire station, is about a half a mile from my house. Although when we're having a big rain event, I look at all of them :-D

Thanks, Susan. It's so interesting how the microclimates work. Since we are in the hills, we rarely get the same amount as downtown, and the news rarely reports on fast our winds are blowing in the hills, unless they hit the over 50 mph gusts. My good friend lives about five houses down hill from me, and her rain gauge always shows a little more than mine. She thinks maybe she has more foliage around hers so maybe more gets in her gauge. Or maybe there are real differences in location -- or maybe just different rain gauges. In any event -- two doors on from her another neighbor has a real weather station entry on one of the weather tracker pages, but I can never remember which website and what they call their location. I should get smart and book mark it! Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving!
