Mixing Tile Patterns

last modified: 3 years ago

I’m curious to know if it’s possible to mix three tile patterns in our primary bath. The shower walls will be 12x24 tiles installed with a 1/3 offset. The shower floors will be a basketweave tile. The main floor of the bathroom will also be a 12x24 tile thats planned to be installed in 1/2 offset pattern. I was wondering if the main floor could be a herringbone pattern. The grout is a close match to the tile. Would herringbone look too busy with the other two patterns? ETA…the colors are off in the pictures. They look wonderful together and we worked with a designer as we created this color combo.

While it is possible to mix 3 different tiles, none of those go together at all. So, no way, in this case. Hire a designer to help you.

I edited the original post to say that the tiles look amazing together…the pictures don’t show the true colors. The large format marble has beige veining in it and the basketweave has the same beige color in the smallest pieces to match the main floor tiles. I’ve yet to take a picture of the tile and the colors look right, but in person it’s great. We’ve had several eyes (designers included) on this project and everyone has commented how amazing everything looks together. I’ve posted on this site before and have received harsh feedback. I guess it‘s the nature of this site, but I was asking for advice on mixing tile patterns…not on how poorly the tile appears from screenshots I shared.

Personally not a fan of the herringbone and the basket weave patterns together.

IMO bathroom floors and shower walls I like the same tile I also not like 2 differnt layout patterns in a space and 12 x24 50% are not ideal since lippage becomes a big issue. I like stacjed for both so that when seen it looks like the tile just conintued up the shower wall. I do this to keep the space simple and also fewer grout lines if at all possible BTW those colors do not work together .

    Patricia, read the comment!

    How big is the bathroom?

VT, perhaps if you posted a diagram or show us a pic of the bathroom.

also, 12x24 tiles should not be installed in an offset. 1/3rd is max. make sure to read the specs on the tile for install placement and grout size

A similar color tile in two shapes can work, but three very different tiles in a small bathroom is hard to pull off.

Something simple on the shower walls, something small with lots of grout for the shower wall and a third tile on the “main” floor need to coordinate very well. Example: A friend’s master bath has large porcelain wall tile with some caramel and some navy veining. The shower floor is blue penny tiles. The main floor tile is a plain medium sized white rectangle. It looks good.
