Where do you live? Morella (used to be Myrica) pensylvanica could work in your situation. I have a couple and they are lovely, semi-evergreen where you are maybe, here mine are evergreen. Mine have single trunks/stems, not multi-stemmed. Mine get some sun, but not a lot at all. They are slow-growing, but the older one of mine was planted ~five years ago and is over six feet now. The other is new this year in a slightly more sunny spot (afternoon sun for an hour or two), so maybe that one will grow more quickly.

if its very dense shade.. things may live.. but not thrive... i hate to have you wait 5 to 10years.. for the plants to grow.. only to find out.. they dont serve as a solution ...

Is it bright shade? If it's on the edge of the tree line and facing south, east, or west, you might get away with dogwoods (Cornus) -- something like silky dogwood or grey dogwood can might do quite well there. If you're planting under the trees or facing north, forget it.
