Advance Waterborne Alkyd - what primer?

Help! Finished priming some old vintage woodwork/ doors (previously painted) with the primer the paint shop sold me, Fresh Start High Hiding (100% acrylic says the label). Now I read the label for my topcoat, Advance Waterborne Interior Alkyd, .and it says to use Waterborne Interior Alkyd Primer. Arghhh!!! I asked for and assumed I got the appropriate primer, but now... not so sure. I dont think this is right. Fortunately I havent gotten very far and if need be I am ready, willing and able to sand off what I can of the acrylic. What say you pro's.....?

Almost ANY good Primer will be fine under the ADVANCE finish coats!!

* It ain't cheap, but a DAMN good primer is STIX by INSL-X.

* When dried, STIX can be lightly sanded if you're fussy.

* If desired, apply 2 coats of STIX, wait 'til next day, & lightly sand with 180-220 grit, & remove all dust.

* Now the surface will be a whisker smoother.

* DON'T do the "Thin coats" silliness!!! Full equal coats of everything.

* If applied too thin, the Cabinet paint can't level a bit because it's too thin!

Anyone? I dont suppose I can painit an alkyd top coat over an acrylic primer? Spoze I could go buy some acrylic Advance for top coat but that stuff is expensive and really not the route I wanted to go,

Well I talked to paint store, - they said totally ok to do alkyd over acrylic primer - because the Advance alkyd is "waterborne" its not acting like the old style oil base paint. They also said that what I used, Fresh Start, was what was recommended but didnt seem to know that there was an acrylic vrsion and alkyd version.... so not entirely sure the advice is totally accurate.

So.... Im gonna just go ahead but still would like yr opinions on this for future reference. And maybe just some general feedback about how different primers and paints interact (e.g. oils and acrylics - I thought you cuold do acrylic over oil but not sure about the other around?) . Its confusing cos now theres all these "waterborne" products and about 20 different types of primer per each brand!

Crickets! Guess everybody is too busy pondering the infinite varieties of gray. So I have original vintage paint layers that include both oil and latex (with edges feathered/sanded down) with 1 thin layer oil base primer, followed by acrylic primer, soon to be followed by 2 thin coats waterborne alkyd. We shall see what we shall see....

Thank U Faron! Now if you could recommend best brush to use with this product I would be grateful - I did first coat with a velour roller (as recommended by same paint store guy because foam rollers were giving me bubbles) but even that left tiny bubbles that I needed to brush out. There still are bubbles where I didnt brush so I'm going to lightly sand and do 2nd coat. In spite of my learning curve, its looking pretty good!

Hi DD!

I don't like going too soft, or too stiff. The medium-stiff Purdy "XL" Series does a good job imo.
