maple kitchen nightmare.

hi everyone 🤗 this is my mother's kitchen and we are giving it a makeover. The granite is black galaxy. It has gold browns black and light grey in it. We love the granite but hate the color of the cabinets. We're thinking a two tone color scheme agreeable gray and peppercorn on the bottom. And are flexible with the tile color. Either a creamy ivory or something dark to match the granite.
We are also going to remove the pot rack and want to add island lighting. Have no idea what direction to take with the lighting.
Style of the home is Modern Ranch.
My mom loves the the organic modern look. No white cabinets please.
Thanks everyone 🤗

The great warm wood tones are very current. It's the striped hickory floor that is less in style and that clashes with the cabinets. No way I'd spend the 10-12K for a pro to spray those. I'd do lighter counters, and have the floors refinished to a darker neutral brown that offers more contrast to the cabinets. Add a new backsplash and you are done.

Thank you it's a very large home we are not able to re do the flooring unfortunately. So just trying to find a color scheme that will cool down all the orange.

I think thats a cashew maple. I find it attractive. i would price light counters and a visual focus w a beautifull blue splash. given the size of space that could be stunning. then a little bling w whatever metals you like for pendants / hardware. my direction would be quite different but anyway good luck.

heres cashew maple i think ….pretty tile really works w the refined door look

and a more basic blue w a light maple/ scandi look. keep your maple !! and both have the darker counters altho i’d consider light counter.

The maple is indeed quite nice... however the glazing makes it look a bit dingy... is there a way to de-glaze / re-finish these cabinets so they will look brighter and cleaner, with an effort/cost that's comparable to (or less than) painting cabinets (maybe one of the Pros would know)?

If so, perhaps it's something to consider (I love the second photo that herbflavor has posted).

If not, I think that painting the cabinets is actually not so bad of an option... if the cabinets will not be white, might be worth incorporating white to e.g. the backsplash (perhaps a white & gray / white & black combo, so it would tie into the gray cabinets / black countertop?), so the kitchen will have brighter elements to it.

I am in the exact same boat. Very similar kitchen and counters. Narrowing down colors and considering SW Natural linen for cabits (matte, no shine-may have Benj Moore do color match per painter who likes their cabinet products), perhaps SW Minimalist (eggshell) or something similar (could go a bit darker), and trim is Pure White (semi-gloss). This has been some process and I am exhausted! I have dreams about LRV. LOL.

Before spending big money on permanent changes, I’d try styling that reflects the desire for organic modern. You may find a look you love for much less money.

I don't think painting the cabinets is your answer. I also don't think "un-glazing" them will be either (not worth the effort).

I would start by getting rid of everything on the tops of the cabinets and the lamp on the island. If your mother needs a lamp on the island, what she really needs is better lighting. But you've already planned on improving the island lighting, so I guess you've taken care of that piece.

I think I would also get rid of the clock on top of the refrigerator. And I hate to say that the art work on the refrigerator needs to be relocated if you want organic modern. Or at least organized better.

A lighter countertop and better backsplash would help a lot. I think something like Glacier White Corian would help you go modern. Or a stainless steel counter with a stainless backsplash.

Here’s a suggestion for a linear chandelier over the island.

if you decide to keep the cabinet color as is and are still open to dark backsplash, I think a hunter green would look nice. Esp if you change hardware to a brushed brass. once you do the light fixture, declutter and add a runner or area rug the space could look quite different.
