Mine have never gotten over 4 feet tall, and they were here when we bought the house over 12 years ago. They receive only morning sun, and I imagine soil conditions, amount of sunlight, etc. will have a lot to do with ultimate size.

I only planted it when training as a landscaper, and learned about it in gardeners school, compared to others like "Shipkaense" -hope I got the spelling right- it was considered a rather low growing variety, and some solid nurseries describe it with a size of about 4-5 feet high and much wider,( in Europe z6-7 with harsh frost)

my take is that due to its genetics it is rather spreading wide than growing tall

in the tree shrub and conifer world.. nothing really stops growing at some magical height...

as the decades roll along.. they just keep going ...

i would also be cognizant of where the plant is.. its obviously going to have more potential in warmer climes.. mostly due to longer growing season or lack of full dormancy ..

all that said.. ive never grown it myself..

Thanks everyone. Guess I'll watch it for another season or two and then if it isn't putting on enough height I'll move it. I could probably even live with 5 feet if it would just get there!

I think most people try to maintain these around 3 to 4 feet high. But sure, they certainly keep growing. It's quite a chore though to prune them back every year -- sometimes twice a year. Generally they like to grow wider than tall, or at least in a very rounded form.

If you're looking for something that grows taller than wide and fairly quickly up to 10 feet, then maybe consider a Skip laurel.
