Trying to decide if I need another chair, and if I do, what color. Appreciate your thoughts!

I agree to turning rug for max benefit. It’s really cool.

You might like the Apex ottoman with your bubble sofa. It’s a different line, but has the identical bubble top and comes in the same fabrics. Design Within Reach has a lot of fun and unique chairs that you might like.

Hi Little Bird - glad someone is familiar with the pieces! Which color Apex would you recommend?

If we get another chair/ottoman, playing with the position of the rug is definitely a consideration. Also, because rug creates so many challenges, thinking of replacing the rug.
TV room is actually under reshuffling, so the present sofa may not stay.

Lyn, the cabinet is not black, it is blue, so may not fit with sofa. Pony wall has a big vent. TaDa was kind of an idea. It is not just taDa for incoming ppl, it is for us when we come downstairs and walk around on the first floor. I think I need a new rug and two swivels, just need to decide whether the same (hight/color/fabric/etc.) or different. Many thanks to all!

Or swivel and comfy ottoman (like Apex)

Yves Klein blue deserves some gold somewhere.

That’s a statement! What software did you use to edit the picture?

Unfortunately does not go with anything in the house

Thank you for making me learn the hue! I thought it was just cobalt :))

    Photoshop!

Thank you! Paul, where is the shiny table from?

I think because of the disconnect between the style of the eye popping blue sofa (which I'd love to own.) and the rest of your furniture, I think you may need a visual divider between the two until you potential swap the big sofa for something else, like you said might happen. Something like this:

    You need two great rugs.

Interesting idea. This may block TV from dining area and living area. The first floor is one open space they flows nicely. Not sure I want to separate. What did you mean by “great” rugs?

  • PRO

That separation is too much, but a sofa table behind the sectional could create a pretty addition frame m living rom but not block TV. A pretty art glass bowl in the sofa blue would be gorgeous!

What fabulous furniture and wonderful potential in your house! If this were my place, here is what I would do—

*get a daybed, not an extra chair; load with color

*replace current coffee table with that fabulous coffee table suggested by Paul F. (I think this is Jonathan Adler(?) and while I suspect you are not hurting for money, they usually have a big showroom sale either October or November and I have seen this table or something very like it 2 years running)

*get a new carpet (a boldly colored bokhara?) to draw the space together

*assuming you are staying in the house for while, radically simplify the woodwork throughout and either remove the pony wall or replace it with another pass-through/open shelves; see if the person who made you the black one in the other photo could make another or replace both with floating shelves

*repaint (I am usually anti-white but some flat white would look right here and set off that fantastic sculpture, which may need a pedestal, off to better advantage)

Well, if is a one big TV room then the blue sofa is your new benchmark for stylishness. You need to up your game and try to work that in with rugs and pillows. On second look, the rug it is on is nice and you can probably work with it imo. The other one looks like it should be in a cabin in the woods. If you're looking to play down the blue sofa then it was a mistake purchase but it looks like you have high style in mind and it wouldn't be that hard to achieve with a few key pieces and accessories. Right now I don't see blue or its complimentary color yellow anywhere in the room. It's just ironic to see you ask "Too much drama?" when you picked that dramatic sofa! You need MORE drama to make it work.

J K - earlier today I saw this room divider but I get not wanting to lose the view of the TV. I think a sofa table behind the grey couch would help. What about a big piece of art on the wall with the thermostat that pulls in some of that blue?

I have used Microsoft word to make mock-ups. start with a picture of your room, then layer on possible elements and use "remove background" feature for each picture. It's not perfect but it will give you an idea of the shapes and colors together.

For inspiration. Sofa table in sculptural look to compliment look of sofa. Unique floor lamp to right corner of sectional. Tall narrow black and white art on short wall. Put battery operated art light over for evening ambient lighting.

That bubble sofa comes in quite a few colors. Maybe a different color to compliment your other furnishings would work better.

J K, I highly recommend the Apex ottomans. They are super quality, and they don’t ever squash or deform like some other ottomans. I would go back to Roche and ask them to show you your sofa fabric along with all the color options for the Apex. There are multiple fabric textures to choose from, and it doesn’t have to be the same texture as your sofa. But wait until you decide on the rug and chairs, because you’ll want to take those colors into consideration…

Or you could choose the same color as your sofa, in a different texture

Either a Kagan or egg chair like mytwo cents suggested would look also great with your sofa. I think a chair in a fun color might complement your sofa more than gray.

A lot of great suggestions! Thank you

I think both rugs have a modern look to them if accented properly. I don't mind the separate areas and think the grey couch works with the doorway in that space. Agree you need more big and bold pieces in both rooms to make it all work. There is red and pink in your TV area rug. Don't forget lighting! Look how cool a nice big fixture can look. Could you please add the picture of your adjacent room (rooms) so we can see what you're working with. Repeat each color/shape around the space.

Normally I'd suggest drapes but I like the clean look and privacy does not seem to be an issue. Now you just need some big art and other things to draw your eye around the room.

nmmamax3, totally agree with you! We do need art pieces (wall’s mostly) - work in progress :)) Thank you for supporting my “cabin” rug lol. I thought it worked with grey couch and fireplace

Brining some art may help with another chair/ottoman selection. That blue is tough to find as an accent in pillows/rugs.

I don’t think you necessarily need to look for that same cobalt blue for pillows and accessories; but adding other blues, or other colors that are of that same intensity would help pull your look together. You have a good base to start with. I think the art will make a big difference.

But before you buy new things, it might be helpful for you to look at various color schemes to see what direction you want to go in, so the two rooms look like they belong together

Dear Little Bird - thank you so much, I totally agree with you on studying the color and figuring out matching tones/hues. I really do not want to bring more furniture unless it is functionally necessary but instead work on incorporating what I have with art, possibly extra pillow(s) or floor lamp or ottoman

  • PRO

Function is great, but don’t forget overall balance in your final looks. I love a bright fuschia with your cobalt sofa but only in small doses. I would keep chairs neutral. As time passes, they tend to work in more places in this home or next home. Pillows can be changed out as the spirit moves you. Little Bird put together some lovely combinations so you can’t go wrong there.

J K, that seems like a smart plan. Here’s another nice color scheme I just saw in a magazine. I think Flo has good advice too. I think when you see the color scheme that you’re really drawn to, try to stick with just those colors shown in the photo, because it can be hard to just throw new colors together unless you’re an expert.

The color scheme above does a good job pulling together grays, wood, white, gold and highly saturated colors in a really cohesive and almost soothing way

Fuschia pillow if you go that route.

It’s always nice to repeat patterns but in different “scales”. Rug has large geometric shapes, pillow has smaller straight lined geometric style.

J K, don't know if you've checked out Bluedot.com and Ligne-Roset.com for swivel chairs (and other fun stuff) but both companies have swivels in lots of fabrics.

I like what you have going with furniture so far. A big piece of colorful art and maybe a new rug and/or pillows with a punch of color (as Littlebird suggested above) in the LR will balance your cobalt couch. And probably just me, but you might try removing the credenza to the right of the FP. Just seems dark and crowded back there.

Maybe the credenza as a sofa table behind your gray couch? Might work, might not....

Lislane - agree with crowdness, but we are replacing sofa with a similar colored but shorter along the deck doors side, so that space will open up. Dark blue credenza hides a lot of cables inside

Lislane, the chairs you suggested to replace the current leather one? If we get smth similar to the smaller, perkier one - identical or same, but different colors or just one?

J K, I love the swivel from Ligne Roset. I have two of them in my LR - smallish footprint and super comfortable. There are a ton of options for colors and fabrics.

You could take off in so many directions. With the cobalt couch maybe two swivels in a light neutral fabric that goes with your rug. Or maybe a swivel in your LR - and keep your leather chair with the cobalt couch and add the cool ottoman that Little Bird suggested. Or one or two swivels in the same color with your cobalt couch. I guess I wouldn't do two chairs in different colors/fabrics by your bubble couch - seems it would start looking too zooey?

What couch are you getting for your LR? Some color either in rug and/or chair in that room will help balance cobalt. And, of course, a splashy piece of art for the wall.

You are fortunate to have so many windows with a view. No need for anything too crazy inside IMO.

Mock ups are obviously very crude.....

I like the neutral chairs, letting the sofa be the star. One caution, if men will be sitting in these chairs, men don’t like chairs without arms. So think about who will be using this space.

Me too. Lol, my husband is looking for chairs with some arm support

Hi,JK. You have beautiful sofa! but it is disconnected with other space and looks a bit strange. in my opinion, you chould add some hard shapes in part with the blue sofa, like angular light chairs, possibly made from leather or wood (you already have orange colour on the floor, but it can gives more structure). And in the main area you can add more soft shapes. that helps to connect this areas and add completeness to the intire interior of the whole living room. And of course there a lot of work with colors, because you can not add color without supporting it through interior, everething should be in balance. There is a simple rule. If you add new color, use it minimum 3 times in 3 tones on 3 surfaces, better with 3 textures. For example: blue sofa, blue vase and blue curtains adges. Orange floor, wood chairs and golg elements on ceiling or wall lamps. Hope it helps you with your question)

Thank you for your comments! Will remember rule of 3 :)
