I was surprised to find that replacement motors and fans are available for older exhaust fans like this, and are a very simple repair job. I don't remember if I bought from Home Depot or Amazon.

Both have them. I have replaced a couple. Broan & Nutone are all the same. I believe it was 880's I have replaced and the swap out is a piece of cake.

It's easy to replace just the motor, but I've found that these cheap fans go hand-in-hand with cheap flexible ducting that has collapsed and/or become disconnected. I now always replace these fans with a higher quality one (I use Panasonic), and put in rigid ducting, even though it could mean doing some ceiling repair. Sometimes you get lucky, though, and only have to cut the hole a little bigger, no repair work necessary.

Dont bother with any of that just buy a new old-work fan. mounts between the joists and can be installed from the bathroom without having to go in the attic.

Don't bother with any of what? Everything that's been suggested is done from below. And replacing the motor is easier than removing the old fan.

Putting in a new fan is not hard and well worth it.
