mixed counters tops question.

I have granite counter tops in my kitchen. I would like to lighten and freshen the look. I am thinking of replacing the island counter top and also extending the island. I am not able to replace all the counter tops.I currently have granite. Thinking a light quartz for the island. I would like suggestions ideas on colors that would coordinate with the granite and living space. Thank you so much!!! Denise

I would not do quartz when you already have real granite. The quartz will really show up as a fake knock off of real stone unfortunately.

To avoid remuddling, you need to harmonize with your backsplash, not just the countertops you're keeping. Your space actually works very well. If I didn't want to spend much, I would put a large handmade tray or cutting board in a very light color on the island!

Since you want to make a bigger change than that, here are some ideas:

--Keep island granite but paint the base to match lightest background color of countertop that also works with backsplash and the walls in the rest of the space.

    --Or consider new, light chairs.

The granite is beautiful in that setting and works well with your furnishings. I agree that fake stone with veins won't work well with the granite but a solid black will.

Nice kitchen. I would not change the island countertop. I would change out your stools to something lighter and might even consider updating your cabinet pulls to something lighter as well.

    Denise:

That particular granite is a stain-sucking sponge. Replace it as soon as you can please.

I love how well your granite and fireplace go together. I wonder if a runner by the sink that pulls in some of that great blue might bring some brightness in. These are washable:

The granite goes quite nicely with your cabinets and the room as a whole -- I quite like it! You don't have lights on the pic and no shot of the ceiling -- what is the lighting situation in the kitchen? Good lighting makes a huge difference.

ETA: That looks like Baltic Brown granite to me -- how on Earth did you come to the conclusion it's a stain-sucking sponge, Joseph? I don't think so.

Wow, the consensus here is saving you quite a bit of money and headache. I love the ideas of painting the island and switching of the stools and hardware!

Even is you switch to a different top on the island, it would still be in the beige/brown range ralther than a bright white. So, not sure you would accomplish your goal that way.

I think you also need to consider the top and colour of the sideboard on wheels. I can't tell what colour the sideboard is and while technically it may not be a permanent part of the kitchen it's closeness to it suggests that it should be considered. If you change the countertop you will then have three different tops in the kitchen. For now I would leave the counters until you can replace them all and I like the sideboard.

I agree with all the great advice you’ve received. New bar stools with lighter tops will definitely lighten the look, In fact, why not just recover the stools you have with a close match to the leather seating in the FR? And, yes to pendant lights & clearing some items from the counters. I don’t see this question asked - what is that piece with lamp on it next to wall oven? You’ve already got a different top on it - butcher block or just wood it looks like. That piece really looks like a nice work shop bench & tool chest. Clever use if that’s what it is but how about looking for a great cabinet with lots of storage & topped with a white to match the lightest color in your counter tops? And, maybe hang a great piece of art over it.
