Exterior Facelift Needed

Hi! Recently purchased this one story house that needs a lot of work. It has great potential! The front of the house was added on 20 years ago. I love all the natural light inside the house, but the front looks very busy (needs significant landscaping too). We are going to be painting the house a blueish grey (white trim), replacing windows, and will need to replace the stairs as they are separating from the home. Open to adding a much larger porch, but are trying to stay away from a covered addition due to cost (but may consider if the curb appeal increases significantly). Any ideas for changing the exterior to be more inviting?

This is anew to you house and my suggestion is to stop and think before doing anything. First is the interior perfect as to layout and natural light? I ask because usually interior changes affect the exterior . What is the style of house you like ? Windows can often be the biggest factor in a specific style .Yes landscaping is going to be in the future but IMO not until you have worked out the interior then the exterior to work with that interior then landscaping . It always helps to know where you are in the country too. Take pics in the bright sunlight post those here in a comment and any other things to do with this home all posted here in comments DO NOT start another post.

Ellen, what style are you going for? Beachy, country, etc. I would remove the wood beams in front yard first. Given the look of the property I would consider some white fencing to give the home more presence. I like white with possibly dark charcoal trim. Of course, lovely landscaping would be huge. No straight lines. Big plus for curb appeal. The roofing might need replacing too. That’s harder choice so might want to start with that and develop your color palette around that.

Very cute! The designers on here can perhaps nail down the why, but there is just something about your home that is very charming and wonderful. Maybe all the windows? Love blue-gray color too.

I keep seeing a metal roof for this house. I think it would look perfect. If replacing the porch windows, use fewer mullions. Cleaner look. Here are some inspirational photos. See what appeals.

Thank you! We love this piece of property and are slowly making this house a home. We have moved walls and finalized interior layout… are now upgrading bathrooms, laying flooring/ painting room by room. We have partly demoed kitchen to open up floor plan and will be tackling the full remodel next after primary bathroom is finalized (tile was just completed Friday. Yay!) We like a transitional style. Also appreciate a few farmhouse elements. We are in rural South Carolina on 20 acres. I’ll gladly take pictures in brighter light tomorrow.

    Your house is so charming!
I love all the windows. Getting the right paint colors for your home is key. Landscaping will bring out its beauty! I see lots of lavender, pink roses with a picked fence in your future 😁

I would consult a professional local landscaper. There’s a lot of landscaping work to do here as you know… A bit of advice; do try to plant your major items early on. Trees, shrubs. Plan long term hardscape like walkways and patios. Those items that anchor the rest of the landscaping. That’s why having an overall plan is pretty essential. 20 acres…🥳🥳🥰. Congratulations! I look forward to seeing what you do.

It needs painting and landscaping. If you are replacing windows, get ones without mullions. Just plain glass.

Yep, less mullions, calmer look unless you want cottage vibe.

I love what @Celery. Visualization, Rendering Images just proposed! That would be a wonderful addition to your house and probably become the favorite place to sit.
