Powder room by the kitchen

last year

Hello, friends! While I wait for my antique secretary desk to be delivered today, I thought I’d tackle the powder room by the kitchen.
It’s just not really my taste (don’t like the pea green wallpaper), but everything works. So the first thing to figure out is whether I simply need to accessorize better, or if I should make bigger changes with paint, wallpaper lighting, mirror and faucet.
It is the only room in the house that has these colors. The trim elsewhere is white, except in the mudroom across from this powder room it’s gray. At first, I recoiled at the crazy color toilet, but maybe it’s better to have it blend in with the floor and counter, rather than be bright white and stick out?
I know you guys will have good ideas to try. I appreciate your help!

    Love it!

@Little Bird do you have any recommendations regarding shopping for faux houseplants? A favorite on-line source? Any keywords to look for?

  • last month

Kl23, I’ve gotten lots of individual stems from afloral.com to make my own arrangements. They are very high quality. I haven’t tried their potted plants yet, but the photos look quite realistic. If you’re looking for faux orchids, I think the ones for $200-300 a pot do look more realistic than the ones for $80 a pot. My local garden supply store also has lots of fake stems; it’s nice to be able to see them in person first.

I’m thinking of getting a couple of these air plant prints for the foyer across from the slat wall with the bench. I like the full one the best. Which one of the other two do you think goes best with it? I kind of want all 3, but the wall isn’t quite wide enough for that

    Thank you @Little Bird

    I like combo of #’s 1 & 3

Is anyone else’s discussions tab wonky? I have it set to sort by latest, but it’s showing me the questions in random order, with just a couple more recent ones mixed with ones from days ago

That happened to me in the past and there could have been a glitch and they were working on it but it's not doing it to me today

Something is going on. Another thread is having the same issue - some comments are missing.

My coffee table arrived! In real life, it appears a little lighter and more rustic than in the photo.
    .
    .
I ordered this set of butterfly prints, which I meant to put over the lounge chair (one wing on each wall at 90 degrees). But now I’m wondering if it would be better to put them in the frames I have hovering over the sofa, where they would be more visible upon walking in? The 90 degree wall over the chair is really only viewable by someone turning backward on the treadmill, and I hate to waste the art somewhere I can’t see it (it’s a photo print on rough paper; interesting contrast). What do you think?

Oh, the bamboo paper in ikea frames idea for the windows did not work out. Being a different size from the window made the light coming through look weird. But I’m trying a new idea - I put rice paper film directly on the glass on the window to the right. Not sure if it improves the look? You can still see a shadow of the bars, but it now blocks the green plants from outside.

I really like the coffee table! It looks very nice in the space. As for the windows, the rice paper does what film would do. I also really like the new artwork. I do think it would look nicer framed and over the sofa.

I really like the coffee table too - it looks sort of like a drum! Love the floor lamp too. The rice paper is great on the window. It softens the bars & gives a nice diffused light. Perfect. I’m looking at the plant sitting on side table - those window boxes are deep. What would that plant look like sitting inside the window box? I assume they’re not real so no watering issues. I agree that the butterfly wings would be great over the sofa - makes a nice diptych look.

    That looks nice!

Thanks, glschisler and happyleg! KW, good idea about putting plants in the window boxes. Maybe even some faux orchids. I’ll give it a try!

I am so happy with my butterfly prints! I highly recommend the photo prints on handmade paper from Barloga Studios - the detail is amazing, especially for about $100 each. But I have to wait for my hooks to arrive from Amazon before I can hang them up. I also got my ceramic flowers today, and already broke one trying to hang them using 3M Velcro tape 😢. I’ve learned my lesson: use real hardware!

So two potential locations for the butterfly prints - in the corner by the lounge chair (kind of a cool idea, but not very visible), or over the sofa (you can see it right when you walk in, and maybe the butterfly looks better lined up straight?). What do you think?

Over the sofa! The corner look is interesting but I’m thinking it needs to be bookmatched - butterfly parts actually touching in corner - to really be effective. Over the sofa is a slam dunk in my book. Love the lamp by the chair & the touches of green on sofa. I see you have your 3 x 4 etheral art hung! I can’t find the floorplan you posted in this thread to see what that room is - yoga room? Any chance that art can be centered on doorway opening into that space? Is that the barre sticking out to right of art? Maybe centering won’t work because of that?

Thanks, KW! Over the sofa it goes then (as soon as the hanging hardware arrives). I’ll have to look for something else for over the lounge chair. Or maybe use one of my Chinese character scrolls. The ethereal tidbits art just arrived a couple days ago (sharp eyes!) - I’m so happy that I can admire it while using the massage chair. Yes, that’s the “yoga room”. I have it centered under the light right now, but you’re right that the ballet bar would prevent me from moving it over to center in the doorway.

Little Bird, earlier today I went to that site. Glad it was included in your photo. I saved two and want to come back to those when my room is done. Love the butterflies, moths and dragonflies. Also, the herons. I have a hard time knowing which art I can put in the same room. If I'm remembering correctly, you have what looks like a butterfy collection hanging in your living room? Please join me on my thread if you have any advice on this. I would love to learn from you!

dsimber, you can find the butterflies I have in the “diptych” section. I will definitely look for your thread!

Sorry. I was trying to add a link. It's called "Wanted! Design guidance for projects, inside and out!"

I saw your diptych. Very nice. Might be perfect size for my dining area. Or my entry hall.

LB, ethereal tidbits is so perfect where you have it! I really like the simple black frame. The boulder cushions & rug are a great counterpoint to the tidbits. That massage chair - looks like one could sleep well in it!

Oh Little Bird! They will look so good over the sofa! Great choice. And the ethereal tidbits looks cool too! 😉So happy for you.

Love your taste in art. Heck in everything! I like the concept of the butterflies in corner but with your input on lines of sight, probably best over sofa.

Thank you for everyone’s helpful input! So…the IKEA Rodalm frames that I successfully used for the stairwell aren’t quite as nice in this biggest size. The bigger frames show more warping, and the plastic film used for the “glass” is more apparent and cheaper looking. I might just remove them to get rid of the glare, or maybe eventually get them framed professionally. Also, sadly my grand ceramic flower wall idea did not work out. I broke three of them just trying to hang them onto the wall, so now I’m just going to put a few on the coffee table. Sometimes my crazy schemes seem like a really good idea in my head, but don’t work in real life. But you have to try, right?

Butterfly looks great! So do the flowers on wood. They don’t have hanging hole in backs?

They are supposed to have hanging holes, but they’re handmade, so they’re not all formed correctly. Some of them were so shallow that they slipped right off the hooks! So I figure it’s safer to just set a few on the table. I would not recommend these, unlike the really well-made photo prints from Barloga.

That’s too bad they’re not easily hung on wall. But, they’re so pretty & will look great scattered around on bath counters & other random spots. The arrangement on coffee table looks great! Maybe they can be affixed to wood with museum putty for stability.

I really like the ceramic flowers on the table - it's a clean, uncluttered look that works great with the other items in the room, but I found a product on the rainforest site that might let you hang them if you'd like to still try that idea: $7.99 for 20 small hangers (2.4"). Located under "wall plate hangers".

Oh, that would have been a really good idea, jayapple! I was so upset that I kept breaking them, that I packed up the remaining ones and shipped them back already this afternoon. I am usually not this efficient! But good to know about this product for hanging other things in the future

@Little Bird this arrangement is just stunning and so warm and inviting. Your skills are impressive!

What do you guys think of using one of these sets of flowers in the corner by the lounge chair? Either the daylilies (?) or the green/yellow set? Not sure if the antique gold frames clash with the more modern, clean feel of the basement?

Actually, I just asked, but now I think they’re probably wrong for the space not necessarily because of the gold frames, but because they’re kind of generic looking. I think I need something more Asian in that corner, otherwise it’s too many nondescript prints

Find some art and Lily Pad water

The day lilies might work. Our foreign exchange student from Japan was able to make the origami day lilies for our Japanese grommet night several years ago. Just a thought.

They were similar in color as those above.

Ooh, now I’m imagining a wall of colorful origami…but this is probably another one of my hare-brained ideas that will cause my fingertips great pain

LB, you mentioned using Chinese lettering prints that it sounded like you have. If that's correct, how about putting one, two?, on the wall to get a feel for how that would look. I do love the florals & have several florals around my home too. But, I agree with you that they're wrong for space. Not generic as you thought but just out of sync with the simplicity of the butterfly & the ethereal bits. The Chinese lettering 'feels' like a better match mood wise & with black frames too.

Where did you buy the ceramic flowers?

Chispa, the ceramic flowers were at my local garden shop, but you can also get them from Chive.com. They have good customer service - offered to replace a defective one without me having to send back the original.
. . . KW, good point about pulling out my Chinese scrolls first to try out in the space instead of chasing every random new idea that pops into my head! I think you’re right that is more of a match for what I’m going for, more clean, modern (even though ancient), and serene

LB - I think that “chasing every random new idea that pops into my head!” = a CREATIVE!! That’s you to a T. And I think that’s why you are a mother to daughters who are gifted musicians and artists…. just saying.

Aw, KW, you have imagined an idealized version of me! I don’t take any credit for my kids’ talents. When people ask them how they got so good, and they always reply - a lot of practice. I really appreciate all your help over the years! Curious how your grassless yard is doing this year?

You’re too modest LB! My grassless yard is doing great & still receiving positive reviews from those walking by. I just came inside from pruning established border evergreens. The crew that did the install will be spreading a fresh layer of dark fine hemlock mulch bark soon so I want to be done with my spring shaping work. All of my Bobo hydrangeas survived their first winter & are leafed out - that’s the solid green shrubs - 8 of them total. In July their large white panicle flowers should be on full display. My Fire Glow maple put out a great show of new leaves - so many more than it arrived with. My BIL, who loves gardening too, helped me prune it to shape as needed with young Japanese Maples. I think it makes a great companion to my older Crimson Queen on the left side of yard - on left in first pic - the purple blob! The Coral Bells have flower spikes & the grasses are all sending out fluffy spears. I just now took these pics to show you.

Oh wow! That is gorgeous! I love the shades of crimson and coral throughout the garden, and the winding path to the very pretty gate. It just looks amazing!

Thank you LB! I’m pleased with the color theme - the designer did a good job seeing that I had a lot of yellow leafed plants & she added to it. It is shades of crimson & coral with lots of yellow & when the hydranges are in bloom with their huge white flowers it was gorgeous. I expect a great show from July through fall.

Yes! Your yard is gorgeous KW!❤️

Thank you both LB & @glschisler. It was a major deal to take out the grass but I think worth it. LB your asking about my yard project reminded me I hadn’t posted updates so I just did on my original yard post.

Love the curve sidewalk leading to the house. I had that at another house. Yard is very nice!
