^Love the rug idea - I also wonder about a large light toned canvas/piece of art to hang over the fireplace to break up some of the brick (but not permanently alter it)

In addition to the suggestions for whiter walls and a lighter rug, consider replacing the brown wood cocktail table. Maybe a darker metal framed table/nesting tables that tie with the black end table and fireplace insert.

Pretty easy change the rug and get a glass coffee table and you need more lighting at a differnt level Maybe an arc light in that back corner to hang over the new coffee table . No mirror above the FP it will not reflect anything up there worth seeing twice but another piece of art to hide the triangle would work also lighter tones not much red.I don't mind the walls they are quite light already

Perhaps some throw pillows that are plum or a deep purple and a matching throw.

Loving all the suggestions! I can’t replace the rug yet, but for now will get a new coffee table and more lighting. I’m looking for some accent pieces with cooler colours to distract the eye. Maybe 2 poofs by the fire place? For art I’m wondering if I should keep it simple or lean into the business.

Also that wooden clock that my husband loves so much is going 😂

I understand that you're keeping the red rug so I'm illustrating below how you can tone down the feel in your room by using black, grey, beige. I would replace the coffee table by either a glass & black one or of a lighter wood than the one you presently have. Another level of lighting is also needed. As someone else mentioned, I show a large canvas over the brick fireplace to tone down the orange of that section as well. Painting your walls a warm white would also improve the look and I also show curtains by your window to soften the look.

Take out the coffee table. Look for a light one as @lisedv suggested or a glass one with brass trim. The clock coming down is also great. An ivory throw, lighter pillows, etc. will work towards your goal without taking out the rug. (Which is beautiful BTW). Lighter artwork is the last idea.

You can go for a lighter rug as Paul and elcieg posted, but that’s a bigger expense than accessories.

I would paint the fireplace to match the walls…or black…make it more “sculptural/architectural” …than “ fireplace”….…then add some pieces in the recessed area that match the rug colors ….
