suggest a hydrangea for me

cos I don't have a single one. Nothing survives the dry conditions in the wood (and everything which forages there) but I wouldn't mind adding a coupla hydrangeas to the allotment...but only if they will survive in thinnish soil with little extra irrigation. Not macrophyllas either cos I find them a bit graceless and lumpen with weird coloured florets (sorry, mophead lovers). I do have fond memories of a compact arborescens Hayes Starburst and would dearly like something which did not grow to vast proportion and does not have luridly coloured blooms. Is this too much to ask?
