stock cabinets

Has anyone gone with stock cabinets (not from a big box store) that have held up? I found a company in my area who sells stock shaker cabinets for a fair price. The must haves are equal to the semi custom cabinets I was quoted for. The differences are limited sizes for the uppers (going to the top and we have 9’ ceilings), side panels only come in 8’ leaving a seam and no selecting the exact shade of white we would like. Other than that the stock has a HDF center panel vs MDF with the semi custom and the stock is birch while semi custom is maple. I’ve been going back and forth about the 2 options for months and now we’re getting down to the wire. I’ve seen both in person and honestly cannot tell a difference. My concern is if we go with stock, the uppers which are only 12” will look bad and the paint finish won’t last. This is just based of what I’m reading about stock cabinetry online. Please help!!

If you can give examples of what you're comparing better feedback is possible. Pictures and websites also. Hope you're doing wide drawer base cabs. Those get full extension with soft close. Blum hardware is common. Getting the right shade of white can be important.

I don’t have photos. They’re basically just white shaker cabinets. I’m doing cabinets and drawers for the base.

E3 shows good specs. I'd like to know if the drawer glides are full extension. And the country of origin. I'd evaluate the white. Buy a drawer front. Take it to a Sherwin Williams store and ask for a match formula and any colors that are complimentary. This will give you your palette. You can see if you want that. SW can mix pint samples for colors. Get one and paint a poster board example to see the color in your space and light. You can use the drawer front to help you pck counters, backsplash, flooring and wall paint. Led lighting comes in different white colors from 2700k warm to 4000k bright more blue white. 3200-3500k is popular for kitchens. The light you choose affects the white.

Sincere Home Decor Liberty are US made.

Post your layout. Lower door cabs are not recommended other than a sink base. 36-48" drawer cabs are easier and can be divided. Wider means less cabinets and wil save money.

We’re almost ready for cabinet installation so minor tweaks can be made, but not layout etc.

I would go with the Liberty (Diamond) product for the warranty vs. no mention of warranty on E3 site at all! (Maybe they have told you what it is?) I think the design looks better as well. If it's really going to break the bank, lose the stacked upper cabinets to save some money. Good luck with your decision!

Too too many door cabinets. Every lower is more functional as a drawer unit. Wider 36-48" cabinets are the most usable. The cabs on either side of the cooktop should be one drawer base on each side. Obe wider cab to the left of the frig. Drawer cabs below the micro.

Dan1888, they’re getting ready to install them, so there is no way he can now do drawer cabinets.

We asked today and drawers are way more money than cabinets. Nicer maybe, but we don’t have an endless budget.

We’re going with the Liberty, but adding all base drawers is not in the budget.

AB Normal I don’t think you understand the question. You’re an idiot in my opinion.

You are right, stock cabinets are short term solutions. They do not have the most durable joining, or hardware, or paint. They don’t even offer any real usuable warranties. They are cheap for a reason. If you already have concerns, and the price is too much for you to do drawers, then you need to drop back, and plan more. Save a lot more. You will only cost yourself more money for the long term.

I already mentioned we’re going with the semi custom, however, we are not going with all drawers for the base. End of story. No more advice needed. Thanks!

None of those are semi custom. They are import stock cabinets. Assembled in the US from import sourced parts is one way that some unscrupulous companies use to call made in the US.

You can do better than either of those companies. And you should, if this isn’t a flip you are immediately selling. Even flips should do better and be better, but most don’t.

You have an IKEA nearby. Check them out if you haven't. They are pretty nice if they have a door you like.

I’ve heard so many great reviews about Ikea cabinets!

I would do Ikea over either of those companies. You cant go wrong with Ikea cabinets

Is it the quality or the options that makes IKEA so great?

Both quality AND options. Get a KD who is familiar with Ikea. That's worth paying for.

How long do you plan to have the kitchen? You're on a budget and looking to waterfall an island ? No, and not with Shaker in any case. : )

And you might be wrong on drawers too.

The quality is good. It's not a wonderful hand-crafted quality but it's fine. Some doors are lower end than others. The options are somewhat limited (although I don't know how many you have with the lines you've been looking at). The interior fittings are really good--I have some on my non-IKEA kitchen even though they don't fit as well--and the hardware is good.

But you have to like the styles, be able to do some planning (although the store may be able to help), and be willing to assemble. Pretty good bang for the buck.

It's also more convenient for you than for many since you have two stores in the area if one is out of stock of something you need ASAP.

Get a real KD, Delay the project, Save more money.

You won't do another kitchen for HOW many years is forever?

I definitely would choose lower drawers over extra counter embellishments like waterfall!!! Drawers mean no more stooping to reach the back of the cabinets - and no paying extra for pullouts.

I haven't looked closely at your design, but look carefully at what can be eliminated (like the waterfall) or perhaps done later, and get the drawers!

I would look at Ikea for sure. You are in a high COL area, it seems, so probably couldn't find a semi-custom cabinetmaker within a reasonable distance (50 miles +/-?) who could do frameless competitively?

Did you look at Barker Cabinets? more expensive than Ikea but were quite reasonable when I shopped them (some years ago, however).

Our island is not very big at all and cannot accommodate drawers. There’s a dishwasher, cabinet under the sink and a pullout trash. That’s it. As for the perimeter we can likely fit some drawers.

Another been there done that question - do you generate so much trash that you need to devote a cabinet to it? With a 36" sink cabinet, you should have plenty of space in it to have a 2 bin trash/recycling pullout inside it.

Although, you look like you will have lots of storage in upper cabinets so perhaps not an issue.

The whole cook side can be drawers, and for storage considered , you may be better off with range, than a cook top.

    Other glaring expenses?

Why pay for all those 12 inch cabinets, waterfall, and then try to go low bid on cabinetry?

    Try this?

You have a nine foot ceiling height......use 48" with fascia and crown.

Consider a range, which would get the microwave to the cook side of the kitchen. Maybe even have a wider pantry on the opposite 8 foot run.

Lots of info re/cabinetry -- maybe you can help me. Paid for great modern-looking cabinetry decades ago (lacquer, slab doors) and need to replace door fronts/drawer fronts and have a couple of the cab boxes repaired. I have aluminum sides iside the drawers (I love modern and try to avoid any wood looks) and I'd prefer to just have refacing (if that means new door/drawer fronts with a few modifications) if possible. I don't want a local company lacquering -- I want all factory fronts. I love the way IKEA looks and I can forget the lacquer doors for a high-gloss finish, however IKEA sizes are not so good. I have normal (and larger) sized cab doors. Any suggestions of cos that will install all factory made everything is apprecaited. Thanks.

How does one find an IKEA KD? Are IKEA cabs installed in luxury homes? I'm concerned about the sizing (I've different sizes) and would have to tear out existing kitchen.
