C daylilies 2024

last year
last modified: last year

Friday is C daylily day. Let’s see what you have. I added 3 new C daylilies last season…hoping for blooms from them soon.

Quote of the day: It’s Friday night. Time to be a hero and rescue some wine trapped in a bottle.

Cameroon Nights has been great in the short time here.

Cat Dancer

Cheese and Wine has rebloomed for me. Last season was not it’s best.

Cherokee Star, I think most of us grow this one.

Claudine’s Charm was not at it’s best last season, still a favorite here.

Christine Dixon is an early bloomer that has taken it’s time to get established.

Coast to Coast had a good season when others struggled last season.

Coco’s Curiosity, one of Debra’s babies.

Coyote Moon, so prolific here and has had instant rebloom. This smaller flowered daylily will stay always because it is such a great performer, did well last season with normal sized scapes.

. Coral Majority….you all enabled me to get this one….a nice later bloomer.

Crystaline Entity did so poorly last season I didnt take a photo of it, this is from the previous season. I hope it does better this season.

Ciel ’d Or….eye catching color on this small, good performer.

Sherry: That's a beautiful collection of C's you have. You're right about Cherokee Star. Even in our heat it does well enough to impress me. And your picture of Cat Dancer is outstanding..... One of my must have daylilies dating back to when I first began to collect them. Haven't had any other daylilies in that color range with the form, substance and stamina to match it:

    Coral Corduroy:

Sherry, I always like your Cheese and Wine when you post it. Maryl, I know you love Coral Corduroy and your photo shows why.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions but this year I resolve to put names on my photos. I always think I will remember but when winter viewing rolls around I am at a loss on many! Please notice I did not resolve to reduce my daylily population which would have been perhaps a better solution.

Here are a few of my Cs.

Cherokee Star is a beautiful color. I also like Creature of the Night.

I don't love Cactus Blossom but it is a reliable performer, late bloomer, and the parent of a couple of our intros.

Candy Bandit is a great grower in our garden as Culver intros usually are.

Candy-coated Confection is one of my favorites.

I love Catwalker. It is one of the few true spiders in our garden. The flower is quite large too.

I don't love the color of Charlie on a Harley, but it is supposed to be tall (48 inches). It's new so maybe it will improve.

Cherokee Pass has been in the garden for many years.

Cherry Pie a la Mode continues to perform well.

I was afraid Chitty Chitty Fang Fang would die, but it finally seems to be growing. It produced some pretty blooms last season.

I am not a fan of Choose Kind. This one will be leaving soon.

Come Down O Love Divine is a beautiful flower.

    More to come . . .

Computer Virus has an ugly name but an interesting flower. We like the orange shadings on the ends of the petals.

My last C is Critical Mass. It needs dividing badly but it did produce some nice flowers last season.

    That's all for me.

Sherry - You have so many pretty C's. The colors on Coco's Curiosity look great. Mine did not do well last season. Cheese and Wine always stands out to me.

Maryl - Coral Corduroy looks so graceful!

Kate - It's so good to see you posting. I hope you're feeling better now. Cloud of Witnesses is a pretty Emmerich. What a striking clump shot of Creature of the Night! I don't recall mine blooming last year.

Canary Flush was a new C in my garden last year. I hope the scapes will be taller this time.

Clarification was one of my best performers last year.

    Clown Parade did well too.

Confessions of a Hemaholic made a nice clump.

Coco's Curiosity had its worst season in a decade. I hope it will be back to its former glory this year.

Cowgirl Spurs kept its tall scapes but was way down on bud count last year.

Cobraskin Necktie has always struggled for me, but had its best season with its tallest scapes last year.

Core Values had a decent season.

Coastal Grand was much shorter than usual last year.

    There are many to like:

SHERRY - Cheese and Wine and Claudine's Charm got my attention.

NANCY - Chitty Chitty Fang Fang looks really nice. I also love the name.

DEBRA - Cobraskin Necktie jumped out at me. Your colors seems to be more saturated than when it blooms in my garden.

BRAD - Carmen Renee looks really good in a clump.

CARIBBEAN WHIPPED CREAM: An oldie but a goodie. One that will always have a place in the garden.

CONNIE CAN'T HAVE IT: An attention getter. Popular with visitors

CLIFFJUMPER: One of my favorites. This is its second year in the garden. Approaching its registered height. Big flowers.

CHILLED ORANGE SORBET: Pretty consistent year to year.

CONWAY SERENDIPITY: A diploid with a gold edge.

    CLOWN PARADE: A terrific plant.

COSMIC SHINER: New this past year

    COBRASKIN NECKTIE

COCKY AND BOLD: A nice wide open bloom. One of Mr. Bennett's taller intros.

    CHEATING HEART

    CHARLOTTE ROYCROFT

CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS: Great bloom, but a short scape. It is registered as a 24 inch scape. So far, the tallest mine has gotten is 16 inches.

    CHARM CITY CERISE GLOW

    CARELESS DREAM

    CRITICAL MASS

    CORINTHIAN PINK

    CAROLINA COOL DOWN

    That is all from me.

David, Charm City Cerise Glow really caught my eye, such a stunning color. I like Bennetts Cocky and Bold, I enjoy every time you post it…..one of his best in my eye.

    Sherry

  • last year

David, Cocky & Bold, Charm City Cerise Glow [bright!] and Carolina Cool Down are all so pretty.

Mantis, I really like Cancun Candy, Critonic In Living Color, Crystal Castles, and Chicago Girls.

Coral Corduroy has broadly ruffled petals and a beautiful blended color. So many older cultivars fall out of commerce as people chase newer novelties.

Chateau Belair was beautiful, though subpar last summer.

Mantis, I do enjoy your photos and comments on your blooms….I‘ve learned so much here. I have been growing daylilies for 30 years and learning on my own. Thanks to you and the others here for sharing your knowledge.

Mantis - That clump of Cancun Candy is impressive. It did like last year. I like the vibrant color of Crintonic Living Color. Clarification here was deprived of rain, but didn't seem to care.

David - It was unusually cool here last season, and that accounts for Cobraskin Necktie's darker color. Mine usually looks more like your photo. Cocky and Bold always appeals to me.

Brad - Carmen Renee always performs so well for you. Mine had short scapes and few buds last year.

Nancy - Come Down O Love Divine grabs me every time. I like the light yellows. Cherry Pie a la Mode looks like it was well-budded last year.

Mantis, Chico Tim is still doing well here. I just didn't get a photo of it last season It was such an 'of'f year for us with the drought/heat and the damage in the garden. Cancun Candy is in a section of garden that has gotten overrun with a vine Bob planted. It also got crushed in the windstorm so we didn't see it at all. That whole bed is slated to be redone (with that vine being eradicated). I will be anxious to move Cancun Candy to a new spot. Your clump is lovely.

Thanks for the information on CLASH OF ABSOLUTES. That one has been on my list to get for a while now. I guess I will move on. It is nice to see CHANGED IN A MOMENT as I have it coming in the Spring. I like CRINTONIC IN LIVING COLOR. It has a wonderful color.

There are a few advantages to growing in containers. We too had a drought during the last half of the season. However the daylilies seemed unaffected ( unlike the gardener who was seen lugging the hose around to each pot at least once (sometimes twice) every day).......Nan: I could see Chitty Chitty Fang Fang in my collection of yellows. A pretty shade of yellow...Kate: So glad you feel up to posting a few. I like your Cloud of Witnessess by Emmerich and both you and Mantis have one I've considered off and on over the years in Creature of The Night. I have heard elsewhere though that the scapes aren't the strongest out there........Debra: Clarification looks so very tempting. Does the base color fade out or is it the pale lavender that shows in your pictures....Brad: We are all agreed I think on your Carmen Renee, but I also like Chance Encounter. I bet Stamile's do well for you in your zone. Christopher Russell looks good too......David: I'm not much on whites or the daylily equivalent of white, but I've always liked your Caribbean Whipped Cream. It's on my "if I had room" list......Mantis: for me the 2 standouts today are Crystal Castles and In Living Color. Considering your comment about Hanson generalizing about dor vs sev now days, I can give more consideration to nice ones like this....Maryl

    Maryl,

I've had CREATURE OF THE NIGHT for years and the scapes do tend to lean.

Maryl - The petal color of Clarification fades out in 90 degree temps. That picture is from early in the season when temps were unusually cool.

Maryl, I can't imagine growing Creature of the Night in a pot anyway. A tall diploid? Not a good pot subject, and certainly not with those big flowers. As for Clash of Absolutes, the plant habit is deficient only by the highest Hanson standards; it is a bit too sprawling, not the nice candelabra branching. But I have never seen it at clump strength, as it is quickly sold at Crintonic. Here it was in 2020.

Crystal Castles wouldn't like your heat. In Living Color holds quite well, but I doubt too that a color that saturated would withstand 100 degrees regularly.

Caramel Glaze, a Munson, holds quite well. It didn't perform as in 2022, as it had to manage hot and dry in the later season. As well as the effects of the winter/spring inversions. Picture from this year.

Crintonic Crown Jewels is a good red, but mine isn't at clump strength; and it was not a tall plant at Crintonic.

Catherine Folker had an excellent season. Another Joiner evergreen. Nearly always instant rebloom.

Cradle of Bethlehem is striking, but not as many scapes this year.

Yes, of course. Although I did not go this past summer, I visited Crintonic the three previous summers. Hanson's garden is usually almost two weeks behind my bloom times. He is also recently obsessed with lates.

Maryl - I've grown Creature of the Night in a barrell for more than 10 years. Mine only leans after strong storms.

Candy Bandit --surprised how vibrant the eye was

    Carrick Wildon --bright and reliable

Contributing Editor --a Hanson. One I wouldn't have chosen from a catalog, but I saw it in person.

Mantis, Cradle of Bethlehem is indeed striking as is Carrick Wildon. I'm sure you could see them across the garden! Maryl, I probably do have Stamiles but except for Munsons, I don't really know who hybridized what. I don't keep a record of that. I should, though.
