Hosta F 2023 .....................

Good morning and happy Friday. I found this on Facebook yesterday:

This is a fun activity that used to be done during slow winter months on the GardenWeb Hosta Forum. I start a post with the letter A and people can post photos of their hostas that begin with The letter A.

We are still here. No day in between and NO jokes. What the whata? No jokes???

So, let's show them how it is done.

Copycats.

So let's see some Fs today.

This is the best place for the alphabet. I love the jokes! Today's favorite is the pineapple.

Fallen Angel - mine stays small, maybe it is mislabeled.

    Fire Island

First Blush - I didn't get much of a blush this year since when it came up it was a warm spring.

The F’s are definitely a good letter!

Fire Island at the beginning of the season

And towards the middle of the season as it’s starting to green up a bit

    Flemish Angel

Fried Bananas isn’t as yellow as I’d expect with its name but I still like it

Take a look at the pix in the HL and I think you'll agree that what you see there is more chartreuse than yellow, not unlike yours....

no way the Facebook hosta alphabet could be as funny and beautiful as ours!!..
I like the Alexa joke..so true that technology isn’t perfect..😀
    Fantastic F’s everyone..
    Fire Island..

    Firn Line..it’s a little flaky..

    First Frost..7 of them..

I have more F’s..but no nice photos..

photography tips anyone?..how close do you shoot?..a phone or an actual camera?..sun behind you?..or facing you?..

    Francee

    Frances Williams

    Fragrant Bouquet

I try to put the sun behind me but then I shoot to the side so I am not in the photo. When I use my phone it is more for close ups. My main camera I have a 300x lens so I can shoot from all over. Great hostas everyone.

What do they mean “used to be done?” Paula and all the participants have kept this GW alphabet going strong! ....And I look forward to the jokes.

I once visited a well-known museum where there was a prominently displayed white canvas with a black dot. I admit, I don’t get Modern Art!

I usually find Alexa helpful, but Siri, not so much!

Ann, you made me laugh with your comment about Firn Line being flaky. So true!

Farewell Party - in its new home surrounded by Lunaria that I left until after flowering. The hosta was concentrating on its roots this year, anyhow.

Fire and Ice - Lunaria was pulled later to give it room.

    Flemish Sky

Frances Williams with a reversion to Elegans, I think? (Would Elegans be bluer?) I noticed a lot of reversions or sports from my hostas after experiencing drought stress.

Paula..great photos!..crisp, sharp images..good color..I have a feeling your camera is newer than mine..I have a small Canon that my husband brought home from Target years ago..but a phone is so convenient that I’ve been using my phone for years..my latest iPhone (14 Pro Max) is good for most photos but I delete a lot of close ups..they’re a bit blurry..I shoot from the side to keep shadows out too!..

sandyslopes..no idea Firn Line could turn misty blue...wonder how it’ll look this year? 🤷‍♀️..my Elegans leaves are more blue than the solid leaves of your Frances Williams..I have a tag for Frances Williams..forget where I planted it..🤦‍♀️

My Elegans is blue early in the spring and then gets green.

Both 'Firn Line' and 'Blue Ivory' are prone to 'misting' for wont of a better term. FL up top, BI below and the BI did mist later in the season as well, just cannot find a picture of that. From what I gather it is an environmental issue, likely weather/temperature related, and it may well completely disappear the next year. I've seen it a lot worse than what shows here, as in this example from a few years ago (2010).

Pieter..should I move it?..what would an ideal location be?..is there such a thing? 😅..if it’s doubtful that a move would help I can live with the different look..

On to the F's, a 'Fragrant Bouquet' in late September last year. It's showing signs of instability, we'll see what happens this year.

    'Fragrant Dream'

    'Frozen Margarita'

    'Feather Boa'

    'Fire Island'

    'Fire Island' flowers...

'Fantasy Island' showing off its red pets.

    'Fortunei Albopicta'

Same again, showing how it viridesces later in the season.

    'Fragrant Blue'....

    ... and the flowers.

Interesting thing about this variety is that when I first received it as part of a swap, years ago now, I could not perceive any smell at all from the flowers for probable the first 6 or 7 years or so that I had it growing.

'Fortunei Hyacinthina' is well known for its penchant for sporting. I received mine from my youngest brother years ago, at which time he wasn't sure at all of what it was. He was given it by a neighbour across the road who'd had it growing in the front of his house since probably the 60's. When I got it I planted it in 2 locations and one of them started to show signs of sporting back in 2005 and the sporting section was removed and potted up back in 2008. This is it here. And it was nothing to look at as yet, however by 2009 it had sufficiently evolved to warrant dividing the crown into sections of perhaps 2 shoots that were close enough in term of streaking/variegation to grow on.

    'Frosted Mouse Ears'

Supposedly many BME sports are rather unstable. Hope this one does NOT live up to that reputation....

    'Frosted Dimples' being unstable...

    Ann

Ann, I've had them in different locations and have not been able to nail down what it is that it is in fact responding to, which I suspect is a temperature related thing, and of course our yards are loaded with micro-climates. I've had misting show up on 'Ben Vernooij' as well, but not near as bad as that first picture I showed.

Pieter..I’m going to evaluate when I see what comes up..even if I moved it I don’t think the conditions would change much..my land is similar everywhere..😅

    thank you

I’ll have to see if that possible reversion from Frances Williams comes back bluer this coming spring. I don’t have an Elegans, so I wouldn’t mind if that’s what it turns out to be.

Pieter, you and Saija both have good examples of Firn Line before it mists. It’s so pretty when it has the wide, crisp white margins. But I don’t mind misting, it’s just one of those things where you never know what you’ll get from year to year. Flaky! lol.

Lots of great ones in the F thread! Particularly liked all the nice Fire and Ice. I love how it looks, but can't get it to last more than one season. I'm on my 5th or 6th one and still trying .
