We have a main floor feature bar adjacent to our living room. The living room is also open concept to the dining and kitchen areas. We have decided what we would like a sectional sofa and are trying to decide which direction to face it. The options are:

Sofa in green in picture. This option provides an open flow from the bar area and seating area and provides a divide between the dining and living areas. It is more open to the foyer hallway.
Sofa in blue in picture. This options provides open flow from the dining area to living area, but is more closed off to the bar area and foyer hallway. This option also faces most of the sofa towards to the backyard windows.

I like the first green option because if you turned the coffee table 180 degrees it would be centered with the fireplace.

First my concerns: the door swinging into the dining room...why? If you need access do a pocket door. The dining room is very narrow. As shown in the plan, placing a table, so that chairs can be pulled back to allow for room to pull a chair back (around 2.5'/3') from the table is going to have the table and a chandelier not in the middle of the room. That would drive me nuts. Keep in in mind when choosing the table. Find one as narrow as possible. Yes, it would keep you from putting serving dishes on the table, but there is room for a nice buffet under the front windows. Guests can serve themselves.

I have no comment on the positions for sectional, as I do not like them for anything but a family room.
