What kind of ventilation do you have for the cooktop?

That cooktop has integrated downdrafted ventilation. Not the best but it's not what we are here to change.

I'd take some cooking classes. While that is making the kitchen exciting in one way, paint the walls and add a fun backsplash.

remove the decor and paint. SW Alabaster is a safe color to brighten the space and compliment the granite/cabinets/appliances.

The ventilation is in the island cabinetry and vents outside. I could move to overhead vent if necessary or desired.

I would change the paint color, it's very muddy and dragging things down. Something light and airy would make a big difference -- I would pick an off-white/cream that is in the granite and go with that. I'd also consider a tile backsplash instead of paint; again - an off-white/cream that is found in the granite. I'd keep working on your wife about changing out the appliances -- all stainless would look much better.

Would you consider color? After painting with a light color like recommended above, I would get a great runner to place in front of the sink and a fun chandelier for over the kitchen table.

Lighten things up. You might want to consider a murphy door on the pantry. Its a shallow bookcase that opens outward as a door... hinged on the right.

Your kitchen is nice but I agree it's a little dull. Some of these things have been mentioned, I'm just adding my vote for them.

-Lighter wall paint will make a big difference. A neutral or warm cream would be a good choice. Nothing gray or cool.

-New light fixture.

-Paint the island - mossy green, navy blue, teal

-Oriental or other colorful runner in front of the sink and fridge

-New backsplash - light color, warm toned, matching grout, something with a handmade look or in an interesting shape.

If you DIY it should be less than $1,500. You can have a vacation kitchen and an actual vacation.

I sold my home that I built in 1993 last year. The cabinets in my kitchen were the same color as yours. Mine were a natural maple with no stain. A sage green looked really great with them. Originally when the house was built the walls were white & IMO the walls did nothing to compliment the cabinets. I will admit that I am not a fan of white walls. I am just giving yo something to think about.

I would change the hardware and new light over the table and then take a nice vacation with the rest of the money.

Man, you can do so much for so little and take a vacation too. Add a crown that takes yoru cabinets to the ceiling, if you can match the color of the cabinets. Ditch the clock. Redecorate the seating area. Add a long striped runner in front of the sink. Take a step back. Not enough life in the rest of the kitchen? Paint the island. Add a backsplash. Good enough yet? Nope? Paint the walls. Consider a new faucet and harware.

Your kitchen can take a lot of basic experimentation and many colors, though your counters will dictate how bright the colors are. White can work, but bright white might fail. Keep your appliances until they fail. Then replace with stainless as you go.

I have no idea what you style is but these items go to show a lot of easy life can come in to your kitchen without much work.

Never considered a rug. Does that get messy fast in a kitchen? I just keep pouring my grandmother’s carpeted kitchen (and bathroom—yuck!).

Paint the cabinets for sure. I like the idea of a different color island.

Of all the things that have been suggested I would say that painting all the cabinets is the least DIY-friendly change. Do your research before you dive in, it's not as easy to do as they make it look on HGTV.

There is no question about that! I was a a painter for years and have done a lot of cabinets. It is not an easy chore. Proper preparation and paint is essential and often done wrong.

NO NO NO NO NO to painting the cupboards white. I hope Paul's rendering convinced you what a horrible idea that would be. "Remove the decor"??? There's hardly anything in that kitchen. Does it get used? Paint the walls. The sage suggestion sounds like a winner. But anything lighter will be a brightener. You have no back splash at all. Check into a light solid surface look. With your cabinetry you don't need the lines of tile but something with some shine and movement could be fabulous. The biggest issue is that the appliances don't match. Ya gotta win that war man. At 20 years of age --they are most likely at the end of their life.

As you are discussing replacing your appliances, remember that lead time on the appliances of your choice can be three to twelve months. So waiting until your refrigerator dies may mean buying something - anything - that will fit your space. I believe you can also get after-market kits to change appliances to a stainless look front.

A lot can be done. Replace the lower cabs with wide drawer base cabs. Go to a single bowl sink. Change the cooktop to Miele or Bosch induction with a Best Cattura downdraft. Delete the island cooktop and the wall ovens for a induction range and hood where the wall ovens are. Replace the counters with more figured quartzite. Use that as a slab backsplash. Install better work zone lighting. Including under cabinet.

I would replace the flooring with a nice light tile and paint the walls a light blue. I would paint the island to match the wall color you choose.

I for sure would not change the floor it iseems to be what all the rest of the flooring in the house is. I think the space is quite nice , the budget is small change the lighting to all LED 4000K add a big bowl of fruit on the island add a nice colorful roman shade to the window and go on a holiday.. For me I would wait until you have a much bigger budget and first thing get that cootop off the island and make the island a nice clear work space . Then a range where you have the wall ovens and a proper hood. The cabinets are datd for function all base drawers are the way to go but a huge expense rght now so enjoy your holiday this space is not horrible . A nice new sparkly light fixture too and make sure all the bulbs are LED 4000K

Do you have a backsplash? If so, it looks like your paint color and is rather bland. A new backsplash with some color?

Unless you live in a very warm State, tile would be a poor choice for a kitchen. It's VERY unforgiving when things are dropped and tough on the joints to be standing/walking on.... Your floor is beautiful. Fix what's doesn't work or /dated not what's great!!!

I'd take some of the solid upper doors and insert glass so that nice objects could be displayed and bring some colour to the space.

Why two sets of curtains on the patio door and why in 2 different colours (why red?). Do the doors and the window over the sink need covering? If not, I'd definitely remove the blind on the window and at least one set of curtains. (also remove the unused curtain rod over the sink window)

A brighter paint colour for the walls for sure.

Backsplash would make a big difference and you'll get some suggestions if you show pictures of the colours in your counters.

This grey green is lovely and although the wood in your kitchen is lighter than in this picture I still think a colour like this could work well for you.

Some other suggestions above as well - the kitchen table and chairs could be changed, and the light fixture over the table. A new rug for by the sink with some colour in it.

If the window over the sink needs a blind then something in a colour and a little more stylish than the horizontal blind there now.
