You can use wall art instead shelves and side table with lamps from both sides..

You could remove the shelving on one or both sides of the fireplace and hang up art or nothing there at the fireplace or a mirror and you could put art over the couch

I like the suggestions to remove the shelves. Unless you have a collection you want to display or lots of books, shelving can be a clutter magnet. I like the color scheme in this photo, as it is cohesive with your kitchen.
