I just bought a pair of straight legs and a pair of wide legs, I'm happy there's so much variety!

No big surprise that quiet luxury which is just basically high quality classics .. or consignment/resale are still "in". I don't ever consider them "out" but I am also not an on-trend fashionista. I buy some resale items (mostly things i loved in the past but have passed on/worn out). Personally I do not buy second hand shoes!

Girlcore is not really my thing but I do appreciate a well placed bow that doesnt accentuate my tummy or chest!

Sequins - are my secret passion. I love sequins -- especially on something decided not fancy like a tank, tee or belt. Love a sequin tank under a jean jacket or a sequin tee with white jeans and sneakers. I wouldn't wear sequins to work!

Prep School - returns to the styles of my teens. I also shopped at The Limited lol. I didn't really respond to the runway looks but yup, I like the casual and athletic "classics". My closet has always had prep pieces.

Non-Basic Basics - just seems like a "slightly extra" extention of the quiet luxury, prep school style. Doesn't really elevate to a distinct style imo... at least not at my level and price point.

C-Suite Chic - I don't have much of a need for power dressing anymore but i do love suits and jackets. Also still love shoulder pads! They work for my proportions! Again, some of the runway looks made me roll my eyes-- but runway looks are always OTT.

Sheer Dressing - just no ..

XL Bags - love them but would never carry them daily. I am not even sure I'd appreciate them for travel at this point.

Into the Deep - interesting but not likely to wear it-- not even at the beach.

Kitten Heels - always loved them. I think it looks sweet. I cannot wear them anymore but I prefer the look to the super high heels.

One of my DDs is a voracious shopper with expensive taste. She resolved last year to not buy any fast fashion and instead haunts sites like The RealReal. I doubt she is saving money or time but she thinks she's helping the planet. Maybe?

The only thing from the list that I think personally works for me is the non-basic basics, which I try to do anyway. I'm not sure if it's perception or reality but I always feel like I look like I'm playing dress up when I try on things out of my wheelhouse.

Well, I can’t really relate to any of this as my style is so casual, but my DIL is def a fan of the girl core thing, which is a term I hadn’t heard but I think of it as Barbie Doll style. DIL looks like barbie so she can pull it off. See also: small crossbody.

But then she does the prep school thing easily, too.

But where’e the mention of, um, flannel core?

Regarding sheer, this sheer top below, I wore with a white satin tank top underneath to a sorta fancy winter wedding shower a couple of weeks ago. I wore it with a long black leather skirt. Definitely not a fan of sheer showing too much.

I wouldn't go overboard on the bows-I have worn the very unassuming, long skinny black bow in my hair a couple of times-I would feel ridiculous with a big fat one at my age.

Dee, the few people I know who shop very high end second hand stuff like the RealReal do it almost as a hobby. and don’t wear it much. I personally would love vintage a Hererra gown but would never wear it so it would seem pointless. I would also have to reconfigure my closet! I do applaud it as a sustainable choice though, kudos to your DD!

Funky, I have one printed mesh top that is ONLY worn over a ribbed tank; it goes with a pair of corduroys and is extremely quirky for me. I was shopping last month with four friends and we went into a pretty trendy boutique none of us had visited before. It was One friend immediately said Oh, kswl will never find anything here but I saw the shirt, tried it and it fit perfectly. Like Dee I kind of felt like I was wearing a costume, but I bought it anyway (maybe to prove them wrong?) and have worn it several times already. So, you never know…

I still have clothes from the original preppy era 🙄 Also not too girly but I do like the occasional bow myself. Mirror sequins are still eveningwear as far as I’m concerned, but I do have a new to me vintage print cardigan with accent sequins that I could see wearing with jeans.

Bumble, I think you’re right on the money—- most anything goes as long as it is comfortable and looks good on the person wearing it.

I'm not really one to follow trends. I don't dress out of style, but I go with things that look best on me. You can do classic pieces and add accessories to add the "trend" factor. I like feminine styles but am not into bows. Sue, I do like your daughter's crossbody. I think I commented on another thread about them, but the ones I was referring to (and don't like) are the ones that look like a fanny pack worn across the chest. Still, I am hourglass, and the crossbody strap is not always flattering/comfortable to my chest.

That was fun to see. I always enjoy these things, though fashion forward is *never* me. I'm classic to the core so things like basics and preppy are up my alley. Loved the power suits back in the 80s, and C - suite would *suit* me (pun intended). But really, if I wore this into the office ever, they'd send me to get a psych eval! Just cracks me up that she'd show this as an example!!

I'm not girly ever, so ribbons and bows, no. I wouldn't mind a touch or hint of sheer, but I don't like to see me in my underwear...why would I burden anyone else with that?

Love sequins and sparkle and love to wear it a touch here or there, but the last time that trend came around, it went so "miami/sr citizen" and went to crafter/bedazzler everything that it left me with a bad association. So I'm very careful when I go there.

I'm not a bag person and tend to use one small one until I wear it out. Those giant bags ... I actually have one ... I keep my knitting project in it!

And sorry, but I was very distracted by the presenter having put her lipstick on past her lips including filling in her cupid's bow and it was so salmon colored...her nod to marine? And why was she filming in the bathroom?

I can't relate to a single trend. I love the presenter's hair, although she doesn't have to make it as big as she does. It looks fantastic when she lets it go a bit. I like her, but her lipstick color was awful.

I follow Nikol with some regularity. I want that hair color soooooo badly! She did a video once where she addressed filling in her cupid’s bow. Apparently a photographer told her to do it in order to give the illusion of fuller lips.

Sueb, I see you went to the Roosevelt. When we were there, DGD1 would get up at 6 a.m. and get her mother to take her to the lobby to make pictures. It was wall to wall people any other time of the day.

This picture was taken so tightly to avoid the getting the crowd in the pic.

I will look at the video but, and I want to say this as nicely as possible, the moment I saw this woman I did not think "oooh I'd really love her fashion/beauty" advice.

BB, yes, and it was nuts! So crowded with all kinds of people posing. I had no idea people went there exclusively to take pictures. We were there on a Sun. morning at brunch time, and there was also a big football game that day, so it was a very funny mix of people walking thru the lobby -- half of them dressed in holiday finery and half dressed in their Superfan Gear.

Mtn, I made it as far as "sequins." We have nothing in common when it comes to fashion, or lipstick.

I think she is a better style ambassador for the over 50 demographic than most of the youtubers. I’ll never have her particular style but I have some very similar outfits:

I agree, kswl. I find most of her clothes to be classics. I hadn’t seen the black and white evening wear in the 2nd to last picture, but it is what I’m looking for for my nephew’s wedding.

I agree, I like all of those outfits. The monochromatic w the leopard sandals is wonderful.

I can relate to “thrifting”, as I buy pretty much everything (except underwear) on sites like eBay, TRR, Vestiare and Poshmark. I search for a very small handful of under-the-radar Italian, Japanese and American designers that I would/ could never pay full price for, and have collected (that’s the correct word, in my case) a wardrobe of beautiful high end clothing for about 10 cents on the dollar. I enjoy the hunt and the serendipity; I guess it qualifies as a hobby. I can’t recall the last time I purchased clothing in an actual store, although I do occasionally try things on and then hunt for the desired piece on resale sites.

That’s one of my favorites, Mtn. I put together a version of that outfit with light camel slacks, a round neck long sleeve dressy tee, leopard calf hair ballet flats and a similar purse. I have a hard time with lipstick so I could never pull off that makeup if I wanted to.

Kswl, I also have a few mesh items but they are dark and dont show much. One is a black mesh long sleeve tunic that have yet to wear. I knew it was out of my comfort zone but i thought it might come in handy for a summer event when I didn't want to show much skin. It is a little dressier because it is lonnng but it is still just a simple tunic so not that dressy.

I also have a long sleeve mesh tee in a leopard print. I have worn it over a black tank but not often. I have received compliments on it but it just doesnt feel like me.

Anything mesh feels costume-y or just uncomfortable. Likely an unpopular opinion, I think illusion necks or backs or anything is just creepy! Not that I am into showing lots of flesh but I'd rather show flesh than veiling it with something that is, for all intents and purposes, transparent.

The black/white evening look above is basically my bff's prom dress but the skirt was pale pink. (I was not as tasteful or classy-- mine was a body skimming a one shoulder white sequin dress 😂 worse: i attended track finals on the same day and had suntan/sunburn from those atrocious wide strap team tank tops -- looked ridiculous with a one shoulder dress!)

Funky, you probably looked spectacular, young women always look so much better than they think they do! I’ve seen pictures of myself at a time when I felt too big, too tired, too frumpy, and I wish I had realized at the time that I was never going to look as young or vibrant as I did at that moment. We (and when I say we I mean me) are always chasing improvement—- not necessarily a bad thing except when it prevents us from appreciating what we are where we are, if that makes sense.

I'm stunned she is only 48?? I thought she was in her sixties! I was curious since her skin texture still looks really good-and it looks like the only "semi-work" she's had done, is maybe her lips? And, probably botox-like a lot of women now do.

I can't decide if I like it because in a way it reminds me of two piece knit outfit older ladies wore, back in the day. LOL While I like classics, I guess I like updated classics maybe? I don't know how to describe it, but the neutral outfit would never look right on me. I do like the purse and leopard shoes. I'm not a "blazer" person. The jackets I wear are a little more casual/updated. The black/white outfit with blazer looks good on her but just a bit too "staid" or business like for me. This is SO true! I look at photos from my teens, 20s and 30s and say exactly the same. Through those years, I was extremely body conscious and did some crazy things to lose weight -- It didnt help that I was taller and had larger bone structure than my mom/sisters and many of my friends. I always felt like a beast even when I was so thin that my ribs stuck out. Funny thing is, I wasn't very tall at all (5'6)-- and my bone structure is large but isnt abnormal. I should have embraced that and worked it ... instead I spent many years trying to be something I wasnt.

I also agree that young women look great in a lot of these styles I can't carry off -- but I am not at the age I can wear all LOL. I don't feel OLD and I don't think I look old but I am certainly approaching (or perhaps more accurately IN) the upper end of middle aged. Things I could pull off in my 20s, 30s and even 40s look frumpy now. Well, frumpy or flat out "crazy lady"! I probably prefer to land on crazy lady over frumpy but neither is a great look!

I think she has recently said she is no longer getting Botox. I don’t know why.

I like the look and style of the photos kswl posted of her outfits. But it looks very "Westport" as we'd say in our area to me. My life is just not that dressy. I do enjoy looking at Busbee Style as I find her stuff maybe too fashion forward for me at times, it's more casual which fits my lifestyle better.

I also thought she was a great looking 60-something. And it's not just the gray hair.

The NYT author writes about what she thinks looks good on her. I think that can vary person to person. i definitely do not want to dress older than I am or look.

Hu, I have to sometimes stop myself from dressing too young. I'm a petite and my choices are limited.

I had to look up girl core and found soft core fashion. Very pretty. Tired of looking at tight mini skirts and dresses that are so short no one wants to bend over. That's one trend I hope is on the way out.

Whew! Glad Ollie brought her age up first because I was getting ready to comment especially on her closeup from the video. Gray hair is pretty but it ages her 20 years, along with the brows. I'd never take advice from her.

I think in some of the pics above, she dresses too old, now that I know she is 48. Her hair (which is gorgeous, btw) AND "some" of her clothes, age her-especially for her occupation-unless she is targeting an older age demographic. If so, nothing wrong with that, it's just not the norm with these influencers.

I like a more natural eyebrow now-I now have mine laminated, which straightens my eyebrows and not so wild-looking. Hers are too bold, IMO.

I am not into fashion trend. Everyone’s fashion sense is different. One life down earth I create my own. Lol If you think your winter gears are boring, watch winter street fashion in Milan on YouTube. You‘d see so many beautiful winter gears. It’s fun to watch with a cup of tea.

Street videos in Milan definitely featire fashion trends, jist not mecessarily ”fast” fashion.

I am approaching my spring wardrobe with caution. It’s not as easy to find longliveable (sic?) durable pieces when the fabrics are thin and laundered more frequently. Perhaps that is why denim is a perennial favorite?

In late february maybr we can talk about spring and summer purchases and compare notes. I think pink, white and navy will be my dominant colors for warm weather this year.

I feel like my knowledge of actually current fashion has started to slide the further I get from my 20s so it's nice to feel like I have some awareness rather than being years behind, even if I still choose not to dress in current fashion trends. I did like the Quiet Luxury and Non-Basic Basics, but not much else really speaks to me. I do like suits but rarely find a reason to wear one. Maybe I'll find a reason to wear a blazer with jeans again (it's been a while).

Here is a very basic fashion statement. I ordered this sweater a while ago and wore it for the first time today. It is so soft and nicely made IMO, and because I was able to get it in petite, it’s a good length for me. I might need to get another color… I am usually not a big fan of LLB clothes because they’re more preppy, but once in a while I do find something great there. I also got a cream color cable cardigan sweater that I like a lot, too. Both sweaters will see me through spring in New England.

That’s a great sweater to have in your wardrobe, Sue. It’s a good basic for color, style and three season wearability. (I keep making up words for this thread, why??) I would also order that sweater in petite even though i am just under 5’7” because to my eye it looks about three inches longer than I like. When things hit my low hips I look like a tree :(
