Love that art/ - especially the Heron. I do think the heron should be looking into the open space rather than into a corner. Not sure I would’ve thought of that but looking at art & space it just seems better placement to be facing windows. I like the arrangement you’ve mocked up. Are the fish pink toned or hints of orangy tone? Hard to tell on my screen - either color works in the room. I love watercolor art! Also, I agree these pieces look ’slightly Asian’ & really go nicely with the calligraphy. Their ’weight’, for lack of a better term, is perfect for the dining space pieces too.

  • last year

Oh, good point - it does seem better for the heron to be looking towards the window, and not the corner wall. I just wasn’t sure if it was macabre for the heron to be eyeing the fish for eating, but it is in a dining room! The actual fish are coral colored, much more complex in person than those flat images. The heron has some coral and purple, which doesn’t show up in the pic either.

  • last year

The heron should definitely face the fish! They’ve got architecture in between and it’s a subtle humourous touch. Lovely paintings!

  • last year

I don’t think the heron will look like he’s eyeing his dinner 😄 especially with the glass between them. I can now see the fish color as coral & that‘s perfect with that color in the rug. I can see the hints of purple & coral in the heron’s neck. Are these already framed? Can’t tell if they’re in gloss white frames or that’s a background. If they aren’t framed are you thinking gold & all 3 in same style of frame? Your painted ceiling & chandelier look so gorgeous. I laughed when I read Flo’s note about doing that on your dramatic bedroom ceiling because she’s right it would be so beautiful!

  • last year

Thanks, liasch. I do like humor in art!

KW, those are just screen shots from the website. I just dropped them off at the frame shop today. I’m going to do as you suggested- same simple gold frames for all 3. The framer says they should be done floating, so the glass isn’t directly against the watercolor paper, and so you can see the deckle edge.

I put the harpsichord ladies art in the bedroom hallway so you can see the size. What do you guys think? I really like the idea of looking at it while brushing my teeth, but it might be too big?

LOVE the water color art pieces. For sure the crane should face the fish! I think your picture needs a better place than at a sink?

  • last year

Deckle edges - yes absolutely floating! I have one water color piece that is an artist’s proof with deckle edges & he has it floating on a mat. Your pieces will look lovely! Did you just happen to see these & instantly said Yes!? I have a couple pieces like that - an instant ”I have to have it”.

  • last year

Little Bird - I didn’t realize the ladies piece was so large. It does fill that wall but can it be appreciated in that spot? By anyone but you brushing your teeth I mean. 😊 I’m thinking it’d be pretty great on left wall in bedroom if just the chair & small table are now on that wall as Flo suggests. This art also looks great with the mirrored cabinet over on the window seat wall & balances the room - IMO. I think it’s a great piece for a bedroom, interesting but ”quiet”.

  • last year

I would want the harpsichord ladies in the bedroom. The frame would work in there with your wood bed.

    It’s too pretty for a hallway….

I like the rug Flo found.

  • last year

If you’re not married to the curtains, an all over pattern on the rug works nicely in a bedroom. This would look pretty with the bed.

  • last year

Haha, Flo - doesn’t a person at the sink deserve nice artwork to look at while brushing their teeth? Especially to counteract the cheesy TV inside the vanity mirror. But you guys are probably right; it’s more suited to the space in the bedroom. It would look great by a piano, but I don’t have large enough walls over there.

KW, your watercolor is dreamy! And now I know what they mean by floating. I’ve never seen that before. Buying art is totally new to me; I never did original art until this new house. So I knew that I wanted something faintly Asian in the dining room, but I just couldn’t figure out exactly what to do until I saw these 3. I like the group of 3 better than 2 coordinating pieces on either side of the window. RedRyder, I like that peacock rug. I’m actually thinking of maybe doing peacock wallpaper in the powder room downstairs!

That TV inside your vanity mirror - I wondered about it when you said how you found it which I thought was funny - in the telling only - not in your understandable shock when you suddenly & unexpectedly saw it. But, it’s such a novelty that I’d be watching TV while brushing my teeth for sure! The TV content might be cheesy for sure these days but easy enough to change channels. Do you think you can get on demand shows or maybe just tune in to HGTV! 🤣

ETA - my artist proof piece is kind of special because the artist set it aside for me when he saw my name on a show invitation list. My husband & I had talked with him many times at his studio shows in his home on Camano Island - an artist community where he lives & at his shows in other venues around the PNW. It’s the only original of his I have - all of his other pieces that I have are either signed & numbered prints or Giclees. This artist proof piece is only 13.5” x 6” but overall size with frame is 21.5” x 15”

I’ve seen the rug I posted in another color. If you need me to find it, let me know.

I had a client several years ago when this concept first emerged who wanted every bell and whistle out there. So we put this in their master vanity area. It was a bugger to install and get working right. So it is a “upgrade” for sure. With the advent of hand held devices I think this is passé at this point! But enjoy it if you like! Think thousands to put this in!

  • last year

You have a very nice bedroom!

  • last year

    Thanks, Olga!
I just ordered some new bedding in shades of greenish bluish, to tie in with the drapes better. I’m also getting the desk stool re-upholstered in a bluish green. But I can’t figure out what kind of night stand to get. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know!

  • last year

I also got some fun art for the hallway. These lions crack me up. Usually, they’re portrayed as strong and majestic. But these guys look so worried! Makes me laugh every time I pass by

  • last year

My new sheets have arrived! I like the colors. It doesn’t quite look like the pretty bed photos online, but I actually sleep here so it’s good enough. I think this flower light might be nice here to replace the white Home Depot chandelier.

Now onto the walls… I know what kind of art I like, but I’m clueless what to do here. Should it be one large piece over the wide part of the bed? Or smaller items on both corner walls? Does it matter that the bed is not centered on the wall? (I have it against the corner so the pillows don’t fall off at night). Also, any suggestions for what kind of night stand would work here? Not sure how to tie together the antique-looking desk with the white pottery barn kids daybed.

  • last year

I know this suggestion isn't popular with a lot of people these days, but how about a dressing table in the bedroom? You can get ready at a leisurely pace and feel pampered in your own home, and not have to worry about the humidity in the bathroom, your hair getting frizzy and your makeup not setting.

Hi Tara. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you mean using a dressing table as the nightstand? Or turning the antique-looking desk into a dressing table by adding a mirror?

  • last year

Oh wait - you must mean putting a dressing table in the main master bedroom. That is a great idea! I made this thread confusing by mixing info about the master bedroom with the small sitting room next to the master.

  • last year
    last modified: last year

2 upholstered chairs and small table at foot of bed or in front of the window.

  • last year

I think an antique something needs to be next to that adorable bed for a “night stand”. Something unique. I trust you will find it when not looking for it.

Not loving the Aerin Arabelle fixture.

  • last year

My comment is for the sitting room area.

  • last year

RedRyder, too late! Nobody said anything, so I went ahead and ordered the Arabelle fixture because the store model was on sale for half price. Oh well. Probably should have gone with a more antique looking chandelier, but at least I’ll be asleep most of the time in that room. I’ll continue hunting the antique shops for a cute antique night stand.

Any ideas about how to lay out art on the wall(s)? I like the colors in these flower paintings, but there’s something a little bit manufactured looking about this particular set. I feel like the room needs a little dash of color against all that green blue.

  • last year

My bedroom is very similar to yours and I was in the same exact dilemia where my bedroom was a different style than the rest of my house. Here is what I did to make it more serene and relaxing. Although I have a black bedroom set I think this design would look lovely with your rich brown bedroom set as well. My floors and walls are the same colors as yours

Although it cannot be seen in the image, the area rug is a simple beige rug. If you want to add more black I would get a beige and black rug

  • last year

I’m loving that Arabelle fixture! It makes me think about your foyer light - sort of same lines & style, wouldn’t you say? I think it’s perfect for your sitting / sleeping room. The ceiling in that room is pretty cool too.

  • last year

Hi KW! I figured you would have tried to stop me if I was making a horrible mistake on that light fixture! It’s actually the same ceiling light that’s already in the vestibule leading to the master bedroom hallway. I am so unsure of myself when it comes to decorating the upstairs. What do you think of the peachy coral flowers? I like the colors, but worry that they look kind of like poster “art” from Michael’s.

  • last year
    last modified: last year

I like them - the softness of the colors and the floral images are a very nice complement to the soft colors of this sitting room and its furniture. Not poster art at all! I can see them framed in a gold to go with the new light. I love the sheers on the windows with the ties holding them on the rod. Everything in this room is soft and serene. Very feminine. Like the garden seat table too!

  • last year

Thanks, KW. Maybe I can save money by asking my kids to paint something similar for me! The sheers are from pottery barn kids, like the daybed. Repurposed from when my kids bedrooms when they were little. Nice to recycle old stuff!

  • last year

I love the artwork, too. It’s only going to look “poster art”-y if you use too many of them. But they’re soft and colorful and lovely.

Maybe one in the bedroom and one in the dressing room? Or just one in the dressing room and leave yourself room to find something different for the main room (?)

  • last year

RedRyder, I think you’re right. Probably just pick one of the flowers for the sitting room, and add other art from the kids. That is such a good point. One of something can be special, but too many can look like the poster store had a sale. Thanks, guys, for all the good advice!

  • last year

Given the wealth of natural talent for the arts that you have in your home, well, really, why not ask them to create their vision for your private space there? You know, based on Houzzers reactions to their pieces that you’ve shown us, whatever they create will be extremely well reviewed. Maybe they would have time over spring break? 🐣😊

  • last year

Haha, KW - kids art is free, but finding time between all their activities to do it is the key! Maybe over the summer. I’m moving forward on the powder room, but there’s a long line at the contractor, so that will probably get done in the summer too…

  • last year

What happened to the Lions picture?

  • last year

RedRyder, I was originally going to put the nervous lions in the sitting room, but the art is too small for that wall. I ended up putting it in the bedroom hallway. They look so scared 🤣

  • last year

When we were renovating, we ordered a small soft decorative sofa https://www.valuecityfurniture.com/, it is convenient that it even has a place to store things

But I think it's an interesting idea to hang a beautiful picture on the wall, I like something in a minimalist style, it both decorates and does not overload the interior

  • last year
    last modified: last year

@Little Bird what would you think of replacing your nightstands with pieces that are as wide as your windows and as high as your windows, and centering them under your windows? I'm thinking of short dressers or tables or consoles on legs so they don't block the vents. I am adding a suggestion just so you see what I mean... nothing more. Maybe you can find a suitably appealing pair at your antique store.

What would you think of draperies on your windows? They would frame both your bed and short dressers and would connect bed and dressers. I also like your current blinds. Either way.

I like your idea of using light blues and greens in here. It suites you. So does the addition of a little pink/peach I saw in a piece of art you posted. Peaceful happy colors. That's you.

I love your ceiling fixture and hope you can keep the light airy feeling they have in other elements of your room. Is there a place for white sheers anywhere? Maybe if you had a light blue-green wall background, white sheers would be appropriate to frame the windows on your bed wall?

Your bedroom sounds more like a bedroom suite with it's own sitting room. And yet you don't do anything but sleep and get dressed in there. A chair or bench at the end of the bed may not seem like a necessity if you don't spend time there, but I like a place to sit and put on socks and shoes, because my bed is so high. Maybe you could enjoy that too. Then it would be ok to have some seating in there. Or do you use the window seat for that? I feel bad about a bench blocking the view of the beautiful wood on your bed, especially when there is enough room for a bistro table and chairs or pair.

By the way, I don't recall seeing the view from the bed. Is there a balcony? Or a wall of windows? What do you like to see when you wake up?

I think whatever color you paint your walls, it would be nice to carry it up to the ceiling and paint the tray a slightly different color to create a little contrast. It would both create a little visual height and support the bed area as a focal point. I think it would help adjust the room proportions.

Regarding the area rug, what would you think about a round rug to repeat the ceiling tray and centered under the tray? Frankly, your wood floor is pretty enough on its own if you don't want an area rug.

Hi k123. Thanks for the suggestions. I was beginning to tackle the master bedroom as other areas of the house were getting close to finished, but now that I have to work on the basement, I’ve completely neglected the bedroom. I’ll have to work on it more once the basement decisions are done!

@Little Bird have you thought of asking your muralist if he'd be interested in painting your bedroom ceiling?

    last modified: 10 months ago

Hi KW. That’s a great idea! But I cannot do any fun stuff to the house for a while. They are still making repairs to the basement, and every time they fix one thing, they discover something else that’s wrong. I am still keeping myself busy in the garden, but that’s about it for now. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Little Bird - that painting your bedroom ceiling is kl123’s idea but it’s a good one - a version of the Sistine Chapel maybe? 🤣 kidding! Funny thing - I tried tagging kl123 & the initials K W come up as the screen name for for profile ID kl123 - you & I are looking for the screen name of kl123. Odd.

Speaking of your garden - did any of the basement repair work cause much damage to your garden?

Oh, haha - sorry for the name mixup! Yes, I will get to work on that Sistine Chapel right away! There is actually no damage to the gardens at all, which makes me very happy. I spent today pulling out pachysandra and very spiky thistles. I’m almost done getting rid of all the pachysandra around the house. For some reason, it seems to nurture thistles, instead of choking them out. I planted a row of coral bells in its place, which is very nice against the dark yews. After planting them, it occurred to me that I should have done them in groupings, instead of a straight row, or at least closer together. But now I’m too tired to move them

I love the Coral Bells! You know they’re one of my faves & I have them everywhere in my yard. In groups, in lines in front of things - all those work. I like yours lined up since they’re lining the border & yews. Looks great. I think the contrast of color looks great & probably much more interesting than green pachysandra against green grass & green yews. Do you know their flower spikes attract hummingbirds? The Coral Bells are pretty much evergreen here & I bet in your area too as the snow cover should protect them. When they start sending out new leaves in spring I cut off all the dead & tattered leaves around the bottom. I may be preaching to the choir if you know all of this.

ETA - your hydrangea looks lovely!

I did not know that; thanks for the tips! Do you happen to know about how big they get? Do they already at about full size? Or maybe I should get more (or a different variety) and plant in the empty spaces?

Yours are perfectly spaced. If they survive their first winter, they will double in size over next growing season. They are a plant that expands much like african violets & they are as easy to propagate as african violets are. They send out woody side shoots which can be broken off & stuck in the ground, keep well watered & voila! a new coral bell! This is important if there’s a specific color you have & like because these plants are stupid expensive in my area. $12.99 - $19.99 for a quart pot sometimes smaller. They do like to be divided every couple of years but I’ve had some in ground, same spot for 4+ years. The darker leafed CB’s take afternoon sun much better than the bright green or lighter colored leaf ones do. There’s also a hybrid Heuchera / Coral Bell - Tiarella - that’s more fragile I think but very pretty. Coral Bells are like Hosta in that there are 1,000’s of them! I like them because they provide so much color & are easier to care for than flowering plants.

Here’s an older pic in my backyard before we took the grass out & widened the planting bed. This was 4 plants in my favorite color

This was last year before all these plants pulled out for my great front yard project. Many colors of red tones but just as colorful as flowers. And my beloved little Ginger a couple months before we said goodbye to her.

Wow, your coral bells are gorgeous! I’m happy to hear that they will spread out a bit, so I don’t need to plant any more. I love the color of your clematis too. I hope you will post more photos of your garden as it grows in! Ginger ❤️
